The Rotary Balita no. 709 (November 20, 1952)
Led by our Dr. Gumersindo "Gumer" Garcia. officials of the Philippine Federation of Christian Churches clergymen, and lay leaders, were honored by President Quirino at a reception in Malacañang Monday after- noon. Seventy-one candles were on the birthday cake of David "Dave" C. Gunnell, president and general manager of the Philippine Education Company, last Sunday. The PECO staff honored their loved boss at a party at the YMCA. Two Rotarians were inducted as members of the board of directors of the Philippine Band of Mercy: Dr. Marciano "Ike" Icasiano and Teofilo "Rex" Reyes. One of the highlights last week was the inauguration in Quezon City of a giant housing project of the Philippine-American Life insurance Co. President Quirino was guest of honor, with our Earl Carroll, Phil-Am president, doing the honors. In his lifetime, Hilarion "Hilary" Silayan set an example of a good, clean life devoted to service for others. We shall miss his con- genial company, but the memory of his ser- vice to humanity will live on and on. A beautiful, hand-painted scroll was presented to Paul Parrette by his Philippine Manufacturing Company employees as a to- ken of their esteem for him. All is set for the 24th annual convention of the Philippine Dental Association on Dec- ember 3-7. General chairman of the convention is our Dr. Bienvenido "Totti" Eraña Speaking before the Manila Jaycees, Rafael "Tony" Anton, president of Lebran Studios and spokesman of the Philippine Movie Producers Association, drew a gloomy picture of the Philippine movie industry. Imported films, he said, are slowly strangling local pictures. The rehabilitation of airfields in the Philippines is sought by Cornelio "Balmy" Balmaceda, secretary of commerce, who asked the PHILCUSA chairman to release P825,000 from the counterpart fund.
