Report of meetings : February 16, 1950
Today's meeting, a closed one, was held at the Rotary Room. All front seats were occupied, contrary to the old practice of some Rotarians of occupying the corner seats at the back of the room. Apparently. Tiving Lovina's wholesale fines during the last closed meeting were still fresh in memory. In connection with President Balmy's "Little Lessons in Rotary." Frank Miles was called upon to discuss "The Four-Way Test." Frank acquitted himself very well, and did not go beyond the 3-minute limit. Incidentally, this was the first time, according to Balmy, that no previous warning had been given to the speaker. This practice of calling at random, he said, will be maintained. Several Rotarians who recently gained distinction were cited by the President. These Rotarians are: 1. Totti EraƱa, elected Pres., Philippine Dental Association. 2. Kikoy Genato, just arrived, after a leave of absence of more than 2 years. Elected Honorary member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane, Australia. This day being the anniversary of the Philippine Air Lines, a standing toast was offered to the PAL, after which Dan Gomez delivered a speech reviewing the history of the company. Dan merited the hearty applause of his fellow Rotarians, and got fined fifty pesos for his efforts. Kikoy Genato, who had been absent for two years on a business (and pleasure?) trip, received a rousing welcome and loving "boos." It was learned from Governor Emy Javier that Lucena had been given its charter. It was likewise announced that Feb. 23 will commemorate the 45th anniversary of Rotary International, and that Manila Rotary will celebrate it by holding a Ladies' Day meeting at the Fiesta Pavilion. Monching del Rosario, chairman of the Honesty Campaign Committee, announced that one of the winners of the last honesty campaign, the taxicab driver who returned a bag containing P17,000, was in need of a job with bigger pay, because he could not make both ends meet with his present salary. Three Rotarians readily offered to give the cabby a new job. Honesty still pays. During the open forum which featured this closed meeting, no definite agenda was followed. President Balmy said anyone was free to raise any point in the meeting. Ted Hall, chairman of the vocational service committee, reported on some of the plans of the committee, which require money. Among the projects mentioned by Ted were: aid to the Mary Johnston Hospital, eyeglasses for indigent children, student assistance, aid to crippled children and traffic facilities. He revealed that all the projects would involve P7,000 until July 1st. If every Rotarian would give P10.00 a month until July 1st, he said, the money could be raised, and these worthwhile projects could be realized. On motion of Pacoy Lopez, it was unanimously agreed upon that each Rotarian would give P10.00 a month in order to push the projects of Ted's committee. Bert (Quiet!) Parsons addressed the club from the rostrum, in his capacity as chairman of Rotary Information Committee. As usual he glared and got booed. He referred to the last fireside meetings as "a very sad affair." He said he was sending out stamped, self-addressed envelopes in connection with the next fireside meetings, and that he hoped the attendance would be better. "I want you to send back these envelopes," he emphasized. "Don't detach the stamps and use them for yourselves." Just before the meeting ended, Balmy inquired as to whether all members had paid their Rotary Foundation fees. All had paid, it was learned. Regarding membership fees, it was disclosed that all, except one, had paid. That one had better come across quick, or else......
