The Rotary Balita no. 714 (February 5, 1953)

The Philippines cancer control plan was discussed by Dr. Juan Z. Sta. Cruz, chief pathologist of St. Luke's Hospital. His speech was considered significant in view of the coming nationwide campaign of the Manila Rotary Club against cancer. He said, "Cancer is a unique and a universal disease. It is one of the most dreadful diseases and is currently afflicting 400,000 Filipinos." Dr. Sta. Cruz added that cancer is not inherited neither is it contagious. The ages mostly affected by this disease are from the age 40 to 70 years. He described that it is painless from the start that because of this fact, patients do not find it necessary to consult a physician. He continued that the earlier the disease is detected the better are the chances for its cure. He gave three ways for cancer prevention: (1) Cancer consciousness of the family and early diagnosis, and (3) education of the people. He claimed that the most neglected part is the education of the people. Education, he said, can be done through radio broadcasts, newspapers, movies, etc. "At present the cure for cancer is surgery," he said. "There is no medicine nor drug to cure it." Dr. Sta. Cruz stated that in the United States, each state has its own cancer control system. In this country the people are educated to have themselves examined in the cancer clinics. For this reason 60% of cancer cases in the U. S. are cured because of early detection. He said that 90% of patients examined have early stages of cancer while the remaining 10% are advanced and incurable cases. In the Philippines, he claimed, 90% diagnosed are in the advanced stage and only 10% of the patients are in the early or curable condition. This is just the reverse of the cancer problem in the United States. He recommended that the people in the provinces as well as in Manila be educated as regards cancer. He gave some pointers for the control of cancer: (1) Increase cancer centers; (2) Open clinics with complete facilities; (3) Open cancer clinics in hospitals; (4) Make cancer education a curriculum in school rooms; (5) Reopen cancer institute; (6) Establishment of social sen ice department; and (7) Urgent need of society for the prevention of cancer those found in America. Dr. Regino Padua, under-secretary of health, spoke briefly about this year's carcer drive. Vince Bunuan, Philippine representative to the International Sugar Conference in London, gave a short report about his activities. He brought home with him several souvenirs from different Rotary Clas abroad. Hans fined him for bragging too much about his attendance. Leroy Young was the finesmaster. All the Hindu members of the Clab were fined ₱20.00 each in connection with the celebration of the Indian holiday. For wearing a very "attractive" suit, Emy Javier was fined ₱10.00. All the physicians were fined ₱10.00. Teddy Miailhe was fined ₱50.00. Dalup Dalupan and Teddy Evangelista were each fined ₱100.00 in connection with the college days of their respective universities.
