The Rotary Balita no. 745 (May 13, 1954)
The role of the university in social development through its contributions to business and industry in the form of new technical knowledge and new products was underscored May 6 by Prof. Marvin 1 Niehuss, vice-president of the University of Michigan. Mr. Niehuss told Manila Rotarians that he was impressed by the progress of the educational project sponsored by the FOA and the PHILCUSA at the University of the Philippines, with the assistance of the University of Michigan. The American educator said the American university's emphasis on research and service today makes it possible for its laboratories to develop. new products now being turned out by industry. The new attitude of depending more and more on institutions of higher learning for new contributions toward a better life, Mr. Niehuss said, was perhaps motivated by the realization that the earth's physical resources are limited. "The hope of the world lies in laboratory and technical development," he said.
