500 _aThe Rotary Balita no. 610 (December 9, 1948)
520 _aNovember 25 was Ladies' Night, and as to be expected the Rotarians put on their cutest togs, washed behind figurative ears, stepped with their best foot forward and sang the Bells of St. Mary, to the horror of the Hotel management who feared for the glasses. All this, of course, deeply touched Rotary Ann and guest of honor, Mrs. Blair Buck, who said that such characteristic gestures made her homesick, for in all her travels, never did she get that strange feeling that Virginia was just around the corner. What do you suppose she meant by that? Anyway Rotary Ann Reding Eraña, representing her mother-in-law (who in turn was supposed to have represented her Rotarian Basio Eraña of the Fellowship Committee), upped and pinned a corsage on Trining Legarda's already becorsaged pañuelo; and then Trining in turn presented the guest of honor with a pretty corsage of Singapore orchids grown in the Philippines; and there followed a lot of wonderful speeches that made everyone happy. Mrs. Blair Buck was such an excellent after-dinner speaker that she made her audience feel like they were all gathered at some cozy family hearth and that she was merely thinking out loud. With the greatest of ease, she took us with her thru the many countries that she visited: China, Korea, Japan, and of course the Pacific. Going through the crowded schedule of programs that the club women of various countries made it an effort to pack her up with, one could not help but wonder about the secret that Mrs. Buck must have had to look and sound and BE as cool, as relaxed, as un-tired, and as un-hurried as she was. Considering the presentation speech Rotary Ann Trining made of her, however, we at last believed that really Democracy must be a wonderful thing, especially if the women have their fingers on it.
