520			_aWe found it specially significant that at the first meeting Vice-prexy Ben Legarda presided over in lieu of President Balmy who had gone to attend some Ecaffe meet, no less a controversial figure than the President of the Philippines, himself, was guest of honor. That the affair was a celebration of the most ambitious project of man, the United Nations, did not in any way decrease the symbolic qualities of what we might unabashedly term "the historical meeting." To begin with, it was a refreshing sight to see our favorite husband of a senatorial candidate share honors graciously with the titular head of his wife's political opponents. At the same time it was good to see former RI vice-prexy, Gil Puyat, smilingly pay the fine of one peso imposed upon him by the guest of honor "for having Nacionalista leanings." Now we have been told that in the field of politics, chivalry has died, but such comradeship in disagreement under a Rotary flag did revive the fast-dwindling faith we were beginning to have for all and sundry, thanks to the concentrated efforts of colored sectors of the press. But to go back to the guest of honor: It was a long-established reputation of eloquence that the Apo lived up to easily when he "delivered the goods" to a more-than-just-good attendance of usually truant Rotarians. Interspersed with his usual witticisms and side-digs, the speech was a striking and emphatic appeal for the United Nations and everything that it stands for, thru the parallel ways and the identical creeds of Rotary ideals. Skilfully drawing a vivid comparison between the two organizations, he nonetheless brought out the one advantage that our Rotary has over its bigger sister: that where we call each other by our nicknames, those in the UNO call each other names, which if you ask us is certainly a basic difference. Added attraction of the meeting was the presentation of the flag of the Rotary Club of Lima, Peru by Rotarian Karl Kreutz.
