By: In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 775 to 799Summary: 1. Rotarian A met Rotarian B, and the following conversation took place: Rotarian A: "I was elected to membership in the Manila club 7 years ago as an Active member. I have no classification but I have to reside within the territorial limits of the club." Rotarian B: "I was elected to membership in the club 8 years ago. Like you I have no classification, but I do not have to reside within the territorial limits of the club." Can you explain why Rotarian A has to reside within the territorial limits of the club while Rotarian B does not have to reside within the territorial limits of the club? 2. Rotarian C met Rotarian D, and the following conversation took place: Rotarian C: "I am a member without a classification although I am still in business, but I am excused from complying with the attendance rules." Rotarian D: "You certainly are a lucky guy. I am also a member without a classification and I am also still in business, but I still have to attend the weekly meetings of the club," Can you explain why Rotarian C is excused while Rotarian D is not excused from attend- ing the weekly meetings of the club? 3. Rotarian E met Rotarian F, and the following conversation took place: Rotarian E: "I have been a member of the Manila club for two years. Three years from now I will request the board that I be allowed to transfer to senior active membership." Rotarian F: "Thirteen years from now I will be excused from complying with the attendance rules." What are the ages of Rotarians F and G? 4. Rotarian G is an active member holding a certain classification yet he is excused from attending the weekly meetings of his club and gets credit as if he attended the meetings, Can you explain why? 5. A member requests the board for a leave of absence. Is the board compelled to grant the leave of absence? 6. Rotarian H met a Baby Rotarian J and the conversation took place Rotarian H: "As a Baby Rotarian I presume that you were indoctrinated before you were inducted?" Baby Rotarian: "Yes, I was indoctrinated by Past Governor Ted Hall, Past Governor Emy Javier and Past President Balmie Balmaceda." Rotarian H: "Good! you must know something about Rotary! Let me see if you learned anything. "I have been a member of the club for the last 5 years. I have been secretary, member of the board and president of the club, and district governor. I can recite by memory the Object of Rotary and the Four-Way Test, How old am I?" 7. Rotarian K met Rotarian L, and the following conversation took place: Rotarian K: "I joined the Manila Rotary club three years ago and I am classified under 'Agriculture-Rice Growing' because 60% of my income is derived from said business." Rotarian L: "I was formerly a member of the Baguio club under the classification of 'Enamel Ware-Distributing'. I moved my business to Manila and I transferred my membership to the Manila club." What statements have Rotarian K or Rotarian L made that are not correct? 8. Rotarians M and N are both senior active members, Rotarian M however has to reside within the territorial limits of the club while Rotarian N does not have to. Why? Answers to the questions 1. Rotarian A is a Past Service member. He re- tired from his business or profession after having completed 5 years of membership, and as a Past Service member, he has to reside within the territorial limits of his club. Rotarian B is a senior active member. He either has reached the age of 65 years and held 5 years of membership, or he is a present or past officer of R. I. A senior active member does not have to reside within the territorial limits of the club. Both, a past service member and a senior active member, are considered as having no classifications. 2. Rotarian C is a senior active member who has reached the age of 65 years or more and has held 20 years or more of membership in one or more clubs. Article IV, Section 7-d, of the club constitution states: "Any past service or senior active member who has been a member of one or more Rotary clubs for in the aggregate twenty (20) years or more, and has reached the age of 65 years, upon his notifying the secretary of his desire to be exempt therefrom may, subject to the approval of the board of directors, be excused from complying with the at- tendance requirements, and when such approval has been given the particular mem- ber's attendance or absence shall not be computed in the attendance record of the club." Rotarian D is also a senior active member but because he has not yet reached the age of 65 and has not probably completed 20 years of membership, he has to comply with the attendance requirements. 3. Rotarian E was 62 years of age. "Three years from now..." would make him 65 years old, and he would complete 5 years of membership thus qualifying him for senior active membership. Rotarian F was 52 years of age. "Thirteen years from now..." would make him 65 years old, and he would complete 20 years of membership. Upon reaching the age of 65 years. he can request the board of directors to excuse him from complying with the attendance requirements as provided for in Article IV, Section 7-d, of the club constitution (cited in answer No. 2). With respect to Rotarian E, he qualified for senior active membership under Article III, Section 11, of the club constitution which states: "Any member who fulfills one of the follow- ing three qualifications may at his option become a senior active member: 1. Has been an active member of one or more Rotary clubs for a total of 15 years or more; 2. Who is sixty-five (65) years of age or more and has been an active member of one or more Rotary clubs for a total of five (5) years or more; 3. Who is a present or past officer of Rotary International." 4. Rotarian G who is an active member must be a mobilized Rotarian. A mobilized Rotarian is an active, past service, or senior active member who has been called into military or other government service during a period of national emergency. During the period of emergency, said mobilized Rotarian is excused from attending the meetings of his club with credit attendance. 5. Article IX of the club by-laws states: "Upon written application to the board of directors, setting forth good and sufficient cause, leave of absence may be granted..." The granting of the leave of absence is discretionary. 6. Baby Rotarian: "Rotarian H, you are 44 years of age." Rotarian H: "Correct, how do you know?" Baby Rotarian: "I guessed your age to be 44 because I have a brother who is 22, and he is only half way." 7. Rotarian K did not join Rotary, he was elected to membership, and he was classified under "Rice Growing" because 60% of his income was derived from the business. One does not join Rotary, but elected, and in classifying a member 60% of the income is not a qualification. The member probably meant that he was dedicating 60% of his time to that particular business. Rotarian L did not transfer his membership to the Manila club because memberships in Rotary are not transferrable. He was proposed and elected to membership in the Manila club. 8. Rotarian M has to reside within the territorial limits of the club because he is an "Elected Senior Active". He became a senior active member at the option of the club. In the case of Rotarian N, he became a senior active member at his option. "Any Active member who is and has been an Active member of this or other Rotary clubs for a total of fifteen (15) years or more, or who is of the age of sixty-five (65) years or more after having been an active member of one or more Rotary clubs for as a total of five (5) years or more, may at his option, become a Senior Active member of this club by notifying the secretary in writing of his intentions so to do." Paragraph 2 of the same section states: "This club may, at its option, elect, to Senior Active membership in this club any for- mer member of any Rotary club who was a senior active member, or who was eligible to Senior Active member at the time he ceased to be a member of a Rotary club, provided such former member resides within the territorial limits of the club or within the residential territory recognized as the suburbs of the city in which the club is located."
