The Rotary Balita no. 629 (September 15, 1949).
At the luncheon on September 8th which was dedicated as a farewell for Past-President Ned Hall, Vince Bunuan in an impassioned address paid great tribute to Ned for his devotion to the work of Rotary as evidenced by many activities over the past 17 years in Manila with previous years of service in Shanghai, totalling up to 24 years as an active Rotarian. Past Rotary International Vice-President Gil Puyat followed with similar personal remarks and made the official presentation in behalf of the Club to Ned, of a beautiful Amorsolo painting done by the Philippines' greatest artist specially for this occasion and a fine Rolex Oister wrist watch. Both gifts were well chosen as this is Ned's 40th wedding anniversary and the painting can grace his family residence in Burbank, California as a constant reminder of the esteem of his fellow Rotarians in Manila while the watch will bring to mind the intimate friendships and daily contacts he has had with the members of the Club throughout these many years. Past-President Ned in his response showed that he was deeply moved and touched by the remarks of the speakers and the beautiful gifts bestowed upon him by the Club. He told what Rotary had meant to him for the past 24 years and mentioned an incident in the Shanghai Club when the death of his ten-year old son occurred and at that time, while he was a new member of Rotary, he was amazed to see at the funeral services half the members of the Club, many of whom were only new acquaintances, attending the services. Rotary had meant to Ned the widening of friendships throughout the Islands where he was always a well known member in visiting the Clubs of this District and where he had a part in the founding of the Clubs in Dumaguete, Bacolod and Tarlac, and had even journeyed many years ago with the then Governor Malcolm to attend the formation of the Club in Zamboanga. Rotary had also meant to Ned a deepening of friendships throughout the years, working side by side with other members of the Club amongst whom he could count his most intimate friends in Manila. It had also meant to him an outlet for bringing into action and fulfillment his own personal interests in having a platform through Rotary to inaugurate the Vocational Guidance Movement in the Philippines beginning his work immediately upon his arrival from Shanghai and Rotary also enabled him to express his interest in music through his activity many years as Song Leader of the Club and Editor of three editions of the District Song Books used by Rotary throughout the Philippines. For lack of time, he was able to mention only a few of the Club members individually who had encouraged him in his Rotary work throughout the years starting with Ted Hall who was President of the Club upon his arrival in Manila in 1932; Rommy Romulo, one of our most outstanding Rotarians who, after Ned became President encouraged him not only verbally but in letters as well, commending Ned for work well done during his term of office; Past President Vic Buencamino who took on the difficult task at Ned's request while he was Club President of making weekly personal criticism of the conduct of each meeting; Gil Puyat and Vince Bunuan who were his most intimate associates in Club management during his term of office and who rendered him every possible aid and assistance in making the year a success, Gil being then Vice-President of the Club and Vince being the editor of the "Balita" and who acted as an interpreter and reporter on all Club activities week in and week out throughout the year. It is regretted that Ned was unable to cover fully his intended comments upon his contact with other members including Manoling Lim, Emy Javier and Professor Carluen, the pianist, who had been his faithful ally in musical leadership since long before the war. His closing comment was the reading of an extract of a letter from Alex O. Potter, Honorary Assistant of Rotary International, who had visited the Club during Ned's term of office and whose sentiments expressed in the following words so fitted the present occasion: "Compliments and congratulations would be futile because they would mean so little compared to the joy and satisfaction which the Rotarians of Manila must derive from the fine service that their club is rendering in so many worthy fields of endeavor. All I can say is, 'More power to you! And may Rotary in Manila long endure to carry on its job of service.""
