Gov. Pons Ponce De Leon's monthly letter - The Rotary Balita no. 749 (June 24, 1954) - page 47, 49, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59.
The Rotary Balita no. 749 (July 8, 1954)
I rejoice over the pleasure and the privilege of writing you this, my first Governor's letter, which you will perhaps receive before I return from the International Assembly and Convention. I made sure that you would receive this early in the start of our Year even before I get back just so we can all feel that our team is solid and intact from the start and that we have gladly taken over. I greet and commend you all upon your assumption of leadership of your respective Clubs and I congratulate you for the honor and opportunities that are yours. I look forward to a year of happy associations in service with you and I am confident that you and I will face our responsibilities and meet our problems with humility, with earnestness and with sincere devotion to the ideals and traditions of Rotary. OUR RESPONSIBILITIES The best way to perform any given task is to know the objectives and recognize the obligations involved in the attainment of the goal from the start. As good Rotarians we know the Object of Rotary and the part that we and our individual Clubs must play in the furtherance and implementation of this all-important objective. Let this objective be the yardstick with which to measure the value and the usefulness of every Club activity and every Club project. Our test should be "Will this plan or this decision encourage and foster Rotary's ideal of service?" Our team is faced with the special responsibility of serving during Rotary's Golden. Anniversary year. This is an important milestone in Rotary's path of progress and service and we should try to perform in an equally special and effective way. Let it not be said of us that at the time when Rotary celebrates her Golden Anniversary we who have been entrusted with her affairs. during this year of celebration and rejoicing have been neglectful of our duties and have let her down. Let us so function and perform that the future will look back to our year as one of real service and achievement. FINANCES Nothing affects and impedes the progress of any organization quite as much as careless handling of finances. I cannot urge it too strongly on you to see that you operate your Club within your means and that your members meet their legitimate obligations faithfully. Remember that your Club By- Laws provide that you operate within a budget pre- pared and appproved by your Board of Directors at the start of the Rotary year. Please see that this is faithfully implemented. COMMITTEES By this time you should have all your Committees appointed and functioning. Be sure that the Chair- men have been furnished all the materials intended for them and that they make use of them. Remember that there is a wealth of material available in the Secretariat for the use of your Committees and that all you need to do is to authorize the Secretariat to make mailings of such material direct to your Chairmen. If you have not already done so as I had especially reminded and urged you at our District Assembly, please fill in the names and ad- dresses of your Committee Chairmen in the printed form furnished you and send the same promptly to the Secretary of Rotary International. This is important. Do not deprive your Committee Chairmen of valuable Rotary Literature intended for them and which is all theirs for the asking. Above all see that your Committees know their duties and are striving to perform them regularly and that they implement their plans. Soon after they have started functioning I suggest that you call your first Club Assembly where these plans can be carefully studied and discussed. SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT OF MEMBERSHIP AND PER CAPITA TAX I want to remind you that your Club is an important unit of Rotary International and as such, must meet its obligations and perform its duties promptly to the parent organization. This means that all important reports required by the Secretariat must be prepared and submitted promptly. This especially applies to the semi-annual report of membership and the per capita tax which must be transmitted promptly to the Secretariat on the first day of July and January of each year.
