ELLY MANIKAN Rotarian Eliezer A. Manikan, formerly of Iloilo and President of the Rotary Club of Iloilo until his transfer to Manila and now at the Manila International Airport, did a good turn by practicing the Rotary precept of "Service." R. I. President Brunnier and his "Ann" were extended courtesies of the port when they landed in Manila, by his orders. We are all grateful to Elly for this magnificent gesture. I was a passenger in the same plane which took us (the Brunniers and the Legardas) from Mexico City to El Paso, Texas, U.S.A. last year after the Mexico Convention closed. The Brunniers' luggage was inspected, every piece they carried, by the U. S. customs inspector. When our turn came, although we too were not extended port courtesies, our luggage was not opened and everything we carried passed without inspection. The U.S. customs inspectors probably knew or were told that we came from the Mexico Convention. I would consider this the equivalent of port courtesies. Therefore I was happy that the Brunniers were extended similar consideration when they landed on Philippine which no doubt they acknowledged and appreciated. BOYS AND GIRLS WEEK President Brunnier has declared the week from 25th April to 2nd May, 1953 as Boys and Girls W I strongly urge all clubs in District 48 to plan the program to give due importance to the observation of this week. A carefully planned program will no doubt benefit your community. Accordingly, den lop your program by attracting the interest of the organizations dedicated to youth service and the civic leaders. I quote from Bulletin, No. 6 "SERVICE ABOVE SELF" is the theme of Be and Girls Week in 1953. It will make a fitting central theme for your club program. Whatever specific form the program may take, it can be made to point up that this concept of service to others - "Service Above Self" when put in action rehab in lasting benefit not only to youth itself, but the community and to the world.” EXCHANGE TEACHERS IN DISTRICT 48 A recent letter from Harry Stewart informs that there are a few exchange teachers in our district and suggests that Rotary Clubs would find rare opportunities for International Service in the presence within the district of exchange teachers from other countries. I hope that program chairmen will contact these men by inviting them to Rotary meetings as no doubt they would prove to be interesting speakers. I quote from Harry's letter: "On their return, exchange teachers often make reports to their local Rotary Clubs. Any contacts that your clubs may develop with them can thus become an additional link in the world fellowship of Rotary." The exchange teachers from the United States who are assigned temporarily to schools in District No. 48 are the following: Name Alonzo L. Batson Address Hugo, Okla. Location at National Agricultural School, Bukidnon, (Mindanao) Philippines Eldon C. Bergstrom Mount Pleasant DISTRICT FUNDS To date, no club of District 48, with the exception of Manila, has made any remittance or payment corresponding to individual members, to the District Fund. In case this has escaped your attention, please be reminded that the amount due from each member of the District is ₱5.00. Do not allow the Rotary year to lapse without sending your individual contribution: ₱5.00 per member, which you should pay to your treasurer who will in turn remit to the District Governor for the District Fund. ART ILAGAN OF TARLAC, GOVERNOR-NOMINEE Following recommendations of Rotary International for the choice of a Governor-Nominee, a hallot-by-mail nomination was held during the month. of January after going through the preliminaries of nominations. A complete list of candidates was released in my letter of January 6th. Shortly after this letter was mailed, I received requests from Naning Bustos of Malolos and Tony Montilla of Tacloban asking that their names be withdrawn from the list, explaining further that they had previously declined their nominations. On January 19th, the day previous to the deadline I had set for the return of ballots, there was no majority in favor of any candidate and therefore, I proceeded to prepare new ballots for a second voting. This may not be of interest any more but just for the record, the new ballots contained the following names: Ray Gonzalez Jose Atilano Jack Panis Ben Salvosa Art Ilagan
