The Rotary Balita no. 741 (March 11, 1954)

Your Publication Committee and the editors of the Balita who have been trying to keep the members of this Club properly informed of Rotary events would like other members to cooperate with them in writing something for our publication. After nine months of going over Rotary information magazines, pamphlets, etc. and trying to give you their interpretation of Rotary affairs, they thought to open a contest and offer prizes for the definition of Rotary that might be written by Rotarians. The matter was brought by the Publication Committee to President Danding who heartily endorsed the idea and so we are opening on these pages a contest which in the expressed wishes of President Danding IS NOT LIMITED TO MANILA ROTARIANS BUT TO ANY ROTARIAN IN THE PHILIPPINES. We have been often reading in Rotary publications of the Rotary idea made by some Rotarians around the world and the parallel line of thought expressed by these Rotarians is amazing since they are separated by tradition, customs, way of living and are thousands of miles apart. For instance, Rotarian Manuel Castro of the Rotary Club of Saltillo, Mexico, once wrote: "Rotary is friendship, fellowship, education, service, and above all, consideration and respect for others." And another Rotarian from St. Gallen, Switzerland, by the name of Curt E. Will, said about Rotary: "A Rotary club is a world-encircling chain of friendship, its aim being to improve, by regular meetings of prominent representatives from various professions, the relations from man to man and among all peoples." We would like to know what the Rotarians are thinking of Rotary and what is their definition for our great movement. So the contest is open for all the Rotarians in District 48. It is planned to offer one first prize trophy for the definition declared the best and two consolation prize for the second and third best. There will be a jury composed of three members whose names will be announced after the prizes have been given and the contest which begins on this date, March 11, 1954, will end on June 10, 1954. The prize will be given by President Danding to the winners on the last day of his term and at the meeting of June 24, 1954. Although it will be understood that the editors of the Balita want some relief and help from other Rotarians and that they have to confess that the main purpose of this contest is to get more interesting materials for the pages of the Balita, the length of the definitions of Rotary submitted to the contest has necessarily to be limited. There is no limit on the minimum of lines but there must be a maximum of 75 typewritten lines for each entry. Therefore, we are requesting all Rotarians in the Philippines to submit their entries for the contest "BEST DEFINITION OF ROTARY" and try to win the trophies that are offered by your Publication Committee. The rules are as follows: 1. Entries should be submitted not later than June 10, 1954. 2. Entries should not be over 75 typewritten lines. 3. The contest is open to all Rotarians in the Philippines. 4. Prizes will be distributed in Manila by President Danding on June 24, 1954.
