| Summary, etc. | Spurred to immediate action by the appeal through the press for help to save the life of baby Elvira Difuntorum who had swallowed nine pins, two of which lodged in the lungs and the abdomen, Manila Rotary mobilized both locally and abroad. "Doc" Ayesa, Rotary secretary and director, was among the first doctors f the bedside of the stricken child. He assisted North General Hospital physicians initial efforts to assuage the baby's condition and protect it against possible internet infection. In behalf of Rotary, "Doc" offered Dr. Jose Reyes, NGH director attend ing the patient, a free round-trip ticket accompany the baby to the United State for the necessary operation which could not be performed in Manila due to lack of equipment. The offer was accepted. Manila Rotary also got in touch with Consul Leopoldo Ruiz in Chicago to obtain the services of Dr. Paul Hallinger, leading bronchoscopist. True to Rotary's traditions Consul Ruiz and Dr. Hallinger, both of whom are Rotarians, acted swiftly. Dr. Hallinger placed his services at the disposal of the child-patient free. Manila Rotary joins the rest of humanitarian elements in the efforts to save Baby Elviro and stands ready to do more as the occasion for services may arise/ |
