| Summary, etc. | Did you know that 125,000 ed the Quezon bridge every twenty-four hours? Did you know that of the entire 86,000 vehicles registered in the Philippines 34,000 (40% Brother!) of them are operating in Manila? Did you know that the jeepney is the main source of most of our traffic problems? You don't know these things? Well, if you had listened to the enlightening talk that Mr. Francis Turner, Economic Attaché to the American Embassy gave, then perhaps you will have a little more patience every time you loll away a good solid half-hour at some traffic snarl. There are quite a number of solutions to our traffic problems, but the whole trouble is that, like most solutions, some of them can not be applied. For instance, how in God's name can we increase to a sizable amount our parking lots, when every single square inch downtown is holding an eight-storey building or something? Now, Mr. Turner says, perhaps the Rotary spirit might be able to do a miracle. Not a down-and-out miracle to solve all miracles, but a good simple tug at the wheel to lighten the load that the community can not seem to solve. We might, say, increase the number of traffic light and signals. We might, say, agitate for the building of more bus terminals, and the correct use of TPU traffic routes. Or we might inspire a better traffic administration by smiling sweetly at the corner cop who stands hours in the rain directing traffic jams. Who knows, we might even run into a post for doing this, and that, (think of it!) would mean one car less from this traffic hell they call a problem! |
