Summary, etc. | DEMOCRACY AT WORK Sensitiveness to the opinions of the governed is one aspect of real democracy that is too often overlooked by government officials. An appointive official in particular is inclined to ignore what the people think, and to cram down their throats what the official himself thinks. But not the incumbent Secretary of Commerce and Industry. Balmy Balmaceda goes out of his way to give the public a hearing. He does so even when delay occasioned thereby might seem detrimental. For Balmy knows that first of all a democracy demands democratic processes. Listening is a sign of strength, not weakness. Manila Rotary, incidentally, is fortunate and is honored to have as its president this year a man of the stature of Balmy Balmaceda. ENSHRINED IN HISTORY Did you see the story about Manila Rotary in the December issue of the Rotarian? There's a picture, too, of Bert Parsons' Order of the Orchid, with the names hanging there for the whole world to read. It was in the Balita, reporting Bert's award of purple attendance orchids some two years ago, that the Order of the Orchid had its beginning. IN THE SWIM Bruce Brussolo is not the only member of his family who gets around. Last week at the MAASS swimming meet is a son who won the gruelling freestyle event and was also a member of the winning relay team. ROTARIANS ON THE A C C Rotarian Woody Wood now heads the local American Chamber of Commerce. He succeeds Fred Stevens, one of our honorary members. Rotarian Bob Newton was elected Vice-President. Our healtfelt congratulations to these Rotarians on their achievement. A BIRTHDAY PARTY Rotary Ann Nelly Lovina celebrated her birthday on January 21st with a dinner dance party at their palatial home in San Juan. Two big-named bands played till the wee-hours of the morning. It was one of the most successful private parties ever witnessed by one of the largest group of the cream of Manila's society. |
