520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "The Education of the Soldier" was the subject of a recent speech before the cadets of the Philippine Military Academy of Dr. Francisco "Dalup" Dalupan, president of the University of the East. The Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), intended to end rural backwardness and poverty through community action, is continuing to draw Rotary's interest. Yao Shiong Sho, president and general manager of Cathay Company, accepted membership on the PRRM board recently together with W. M. "Bill" Simmons, president and general manager of the National City Bank in Manila. Other Rotarians serv ing on the board are Cornelio "Balmy" Balmaceda, Paul R. Parrette, Gil Puyat, Jorge "George" B. Vargas, and Domingo "Basky" Bascarra. City Health Officer Mariano C. "Ike" Icasiano was one of the speakers at a short program in the City Hall recently, at which eyeglasses were given to needy children. Carlos "Charlie" Palanca awarded the annual prizes in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for short stories recently. Stories in English and Tagalog were picked by a jury of three. It's by way of honoring the memory of the Old Man. Veep Eduardo "Danding" Romualdez' classy, air-conditioned penthouse at the rooftop of the Philippine Trust building was the scene of the last Rotary Board meeting. A succulent dinner, prepared exquisitely by Danding's Rotary Ann, was enjoyed by all with gusto. A chip of the old block is Eulogio, son of Architect and Mrs. Juan "Juanito" Nakpil. The young man placed 8th in the latest civil engineer's examination. Guest speaker of the Batangas Rotarians last week was Benito "Ben" Legarda, Rotary district governor. Elected president of the Philippine Surgical Congress is Dr. Gumersindo "Gumer" Garcia. The new Philippine Trust building was inaugurated recently with elaborate cere- monies starting in the morning with a requiem mass and closing in the evening with a cocktail-dinner party. Rotarian Eduardo "Danding" Romualdez, President of the Philippine Trust acted as host. Jonby Carlos, Philtrust Building builder, made a big hit during the evening by advertising his accomplishments by means of beautifully lithographed souvenir programs distributed freely during the affair.
