Summary, etc. | Rotarians should feel happy when kindred spirits engage in acts of service as they do. It is, therefore, with a feeling of filial pride that they should take notice of the initial public service which the Society of Responsible Citizens, a civic organization in the countryside (Orion, Bataan), has undertaken. The project is the dissemination of information about democracy with a view to fostering patriotism in the exercise of citizenship. In that connection the organization has been distributing leaflets, pamphlets and other literature. One of the leaflets in cardboard and suitable for framing deserves special notice. It is a quotation from Elihu Root and because of its timeliness it is worth quoting here: "True love of country is not mere blind partisanship. It is regard for the people of one's country and all of them; it is a feeling of fellowship and brotherhood for all s them; it is a desire for the prosperity e happiness of all of them; it is kindly considerate judgment toward all of the The first duty of popular self-government is individual self-control. The essential edition of true progress is that it shall based upon grounds of reason, and not of prejudice. Lincoln's noble sentiments charity for all and malice toward none not a specific for the Civil War, but us living principle of action." |
