Summary, etc. | CAVITE TWO MANILA ROTARIANS, SPEAKERS In the last few weeks, two Manila Rotarians have spoken before the Rotary Club of Cavite. They were Dr. Gervasio Eraña, past president of the Philippine Dental Association and past chairman of the Board of Dental Examiners, and Dr. Mariano C. Icasiano, president of the Philippine Medical Association and City Health Officer of Manila. Dr. Icasiano spoke on Hemorrhagic Fever. "Ike" Icasiano traced the disease from Siberia in 1935 to Manchuria, Korea, and Japan. He declared that the cases found in Bustos, Bulacan; Pampanga; and Batangas are suspected to be Hemorrhagic Fever although certain phases of the blood picture are not like those found in the disease observed in Korea. Dr. Florencio Quintos, Head, Department of Pediatrics, Philippine General Hospital, studied several fatal cases and found striking similarities between those found here and those noted in the literature. There were eight (8) cases detected monthly and such figure is not alarming for any disease. "Ike" Icasiano cautioned the Club members especially the physician-members to be on the lookout for cases. TACLOBAN OPINIONS "x x x Rotary is not an activity of spasms and spurts or a tour de force which must find itself fulfilled by immediate or miraculous hocus pocus. Rotary is a wheel that is geared round and round. and it must keep moving — ever moving — and you have seen how seemingly endless and slow is the turning of a watch wheel. Yet slowly, patiently, it turns to mark the hour and the day, till the dreams we build on a watch become accomplished, indeed, by the magic patience of time. Rotary is like the hour wheel of a watch which must keep turning. "And what turns it? It is the oiled spring of eternal friendship. Indeed, I must stretch the metaphor to a breaking point — fellowship is the heart of Rotary itself. Without fellowship Rotary can never move, without fellowship, we cannot achieve anything for service above self. "It is the fellowship that forgets self, selfish interest, pettiness, jealousy, or even, as the American slang expresses, curedness. When we feel the pulse of fellowship, with the heat of healthy enthusiasm, of earnest endeavor along with others to do things not for themselves but for others. Fellowship forgets the moment for the future, present interest for a worthy cause, self-centeredness for a radiation outwardly towards our neighbors, our country. Upon fellowship alone can we build, as the great builders of humanity built for our world—Jesus Christ, himself, and the great torchbearers of the world like Lincoln, Roosevelt, Rizal, Quezon, and the organizer of Rotary International himself — Paul Harris." –From an address by JULING DOLORICOS, President ZAMBOANGA GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY PROJECT This Rotary year is a big year in Rotary International. After 50 years of existence, Rotary can point to a matchless record among civic organizations. It is, therefore, well worth celebrating. We can pat ourselves on the back and with reason. Rotary, with its high ideals of service, has gone far during its half century of service and existence. It is futile to enumerate the manifold blessings it has brought to the individual Rotarian, and to the world at large. While we indulge ourselves in backpatting for what we in Zamboanga City have contributed to the overall accomplishments of Rotary, let us not lose sight of the challenge before us. We still have a big job before us to help make this a better world. Locally, we have set ourselves to accomplish one worthwhile project this Golden Anniversary year; that is, the reconstruction of the Alvarez Auditorium in Pasonanca, beauty and tourist spot of Zamboanga City. President Doc Rodriguez has already appointed the Golden Anniversary Project Committee to take care of this job. |
