520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Resolutions Versus Actions Does the passing of a resolution accomplish anything? Is such an act more than a gesture? Are such resolutions usually implemented by those who pass them to get effective results - or are they merely statements of opinion with the thought that someone somewhere else may do something about the thought contained in the resolution? Recently a couple of Rotary clubs passed resolutions as to the conduct of the undeclared war. Was such an act within the traditional framework of Rotary as set forth in a part of Resolution 23-34 which reads as follows: "As a general thing, no Rotary club should endorse any project no matter how meritorious unless the club is prepared and willing to assume all or part of the responsibility for the accomplishment of that which it endorses." Isn't there a better way to get action on the desires of men in groups? Would it not be better and more effective for Rotarians to function in such a manner? Surely these are days when action is needed. Let's do more than merely pass resolutions. -R. I. News Broadcast. Call Me Frank Frank E. Spain, of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama, has been nominated by unanimous vote of R. I. nominating committee, for the R. I. president for 1951-52. International Service "All the members of the Club were quite captivated by Miss Madamba's presentation of her subject, and her personal charm." So writes Paul Thatcher, Chairman of the International Service Committee of the Rotary Club at Ogden, Utah, where Miss Odette Madamba was recently a guest. Miss Madamba, Rotary fellow sponsored by Manila Rotary, is a student at the University of Utah. Among 85 Rotary fellows now in the United States, she is one of only two young ladies chosen for this honor. In her speech before the Ogden club, Miss Madamba told of the Philippines and of its problems as a result of the war. Quick to sense the needs of the Philippines and eager to help, Paul Thatcher has inquired regarding the possibility of collecting books and professional magazines to send to Manila to assist in rehabilitating our libraries. The Ogden club may particularly be able to send volumes of medical and dental journals and parcels of used but current American books. Rotarians who may be interested in suggesting libraries in need of these books and magazines should contact Secretary Tony. Junior Rotarian Did you notice that the person who took the part of Manager or leading man in the play given at the Barrio Rotario, is Vic Silayan, son of Rotarian Hilary Silayan? For several months we have missed Hilary, who was taken seriously ill only a short time after his return from the United States last year. He spend several weeks in the hospital, but is now at home, slowly recuperating. Before many months more, we are hoping Hilary can be with us again. How about calling on him some day at his home in Balintawak? His son, Vic, who so admirably carried the heavy role in our play, is a fourth-year student at Ateneo. Invitation To Atlantic City Bruce Riddle, President of the 145-member Rotary Club of Atlantic City, has written extending a personal invitation to you and your wife and your family to attend the Rotary convention, May 27th to 31st. Instead of leaving all preparations for the International Convention to R.I., the Atlantic Club is making great plans for your inspiration and comfort at Atlantic City. Among other features will be a President's Ball and special entertainment for Rotary Anns. Community Service In South Africa In Ladysmith, South Africa, certain property owners had been charging exorbitant rents for slum premises occupied by non-Europeans. The Rotary Club of Ladysmith interested itself in this matter, and as a result, the court instructed the owners to effect substantial reduction in rent. -R. I. News Broadcast. Gold Medalist Juanito Nakpil has been signally honored by the Philippine Institute of Architects by being awarded a gold medal on the occasion of the Institute's 17th anniversary. Incidentally, did you see the several very inspiring sketches by Juanito of modern buildings recently displayed in the Rotary room? |
