520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. To All Presidents and Secretaries: The calendar leaves against the walls and atop our office tables all bright and new give out the infallible reminder that we are definitely embarked upon a new year. We have discarded the worn-out old calendars and in consigning 1953 to memory, we look forward to 1954 as a big and busy year for Rotary. I believe very strongly that the same spirit of optimism and dedication to Rotary animates all Clubs in the District. If for no other purpose, the fast tempo of executive efficiency launched by the fresh, revitalized and hope-inspiring leadership of the new Malacañang tenant should and must provide vigorous impetus to us Rotarians and spur us to greater achievements and increased accomplishments. INITIAL TEST The 11th District Conference booked in Baguio City on 5-6-7, February, this year, will be the probing grounds on the firmness and sincerity of our common resolves to improve upon our 1953 record. The forthcoming DC, being the first major District activity for 1954, offers the acid tests on the degree of fidelity to Rotary ideals each Club nurses. Self-explanatory information, however, can be gleaned from your ATTENDANCE It is incumbent upon every Club to send in a sizeable delegation. The DC is decidedly one Rotary gathering that is productive of so many beneficent rewards to those in attendance. Those who have heen to one know fully well the very good things derived therefrom and they keep coming back from year to year. If you have not been to a DC yet, then by all means do attend this year for now is the time to make up for so many past costly mistakes. Take along your Ann and the children and let us all share in the profits and experiences that only a DC can bestow. And then please remember the PER CAPITA LEVY That is (P5.00) due to the Finance and Budget Committee of the DC-sponsoring Club in Baguio City. Please forward payments direct to this Committee. If you only know what fun awaits you at the 3-day confab, you will promptly remit your per capita dues. While I do not want to spoil the fun for the energetic Host Club readying a number of surprise packages for the entertainment and receptions of all Conferees, let me announce here and now that this year A HALL OF FRIENDSHIP Awaits everyone wherein FELLOWSHIP - undoubtedly one of Rotary's major shining virtues - will be exploited to the limit. Within this Hall we can avail of such essential services and facilities as postal, telephone, transportation and movies. PRE-DC MUSTS This is a final reminder on a number of items which require your prior attention for their accomplishments and submission to me before the DC sets in: 1) Club history - Furnish me forty (40) copies for distribution during the District Conference 2) Club rosters - It is suggested that you elect officers before the Conference date and that the names of elected officers be included in said roster 3) Pictures of the Club President and Secretary are now overdue 4) Speakers at DC - Please furnish me with copies of your speech for printing and distribution at the Conference 5) Project reports - Submit complete and concise reports on projects completed to date for Club. Vocational, International and Community Services 6) Outstanding Rotarian - Forward your choice and cite accomplishments which served as bases for justifying your selection 7) Submit Club attendance records of members with the highest attendance rating in both home and outside Clubs 8) Remit immediately your per capita contributions to District Funds, and 9) Don't forget to bring your Club banner. FASHION NOTE As a gesture of solicitude for all concerned, I pass this word of counsel that you take along formal (evening clothes) wear for the DC. While the Baro (Barong Tagalog) may be worn, the prevailing cold Baguio atmosphere may not warrant my recommending same as official District Conference attire. PAL NEWS In reply to my written request to this effect, Mr. Buenaventura M. Veloso, PAL's Philippine Traffic & Sales Manager wrote back thus: "... please be advised that we have secured approval of a 10% discount on all round trip tickets x x x purchased by attending delegates (to the District Conference) and their wives. For your information, validity of all tickets purchased on this basis will be void till after two weeks from termination of such (District) conference." Rotarians desiring to take advantage of PAL'S Group Travel Plan can make arrangements with the firm's provincial branch offices. RE GOVERNOR NOMINEES Anent last month's Governor's Monthly Letter's paragraph on NOMINATIONS FOR DISTRICT GOVERNOR, this addendum is being made. Nominations will be received on the floor of the DC and the date fixed for submission of Nominees is extended to the first day (Feb. 5) of the Conference. Names previously submitted by mail will be announced before the floor. Please furnish factual information with your nomination. This step is being taken with the idea of ascertaining that the Nominee enjoys the endorsement and support of the sponsoring club which perforce must instruct its electors to vote in a manner reflecting and expressing the Club's desires and sentiments. CAUTION To forestall unnecessary embarrassments or delay, the attention of Clubs sponsoring Nominees for District Governor is invited to take into careful cognizance the provisions of the order of ADVANCEMENT IN OFFICE contained in our Manual of Procedure, to wit: 1) That a club director shall have served as chairman of a club committee; 2) that a club president shall have served as a club director or club secretary; 3) that a governor shall have served as a club president or club secretary; 4) that a director of RI shall have served as a governor; and 5) that a president of RI shall have served as director of RI. 49th RI ANNIVERSARY Every club must endeavor to observe this significant milestone in Rotary history, February 23, 1954, in a manner as to make both Rotarians and non-Rotarians in the community take proper appreciation of and develop keen interest in Rotary. Hereunder are reprinted salient facts about Rotary received by me from RI which I know you will find pertinent to and essential in mapping out an effective observance of this day as an instrument in encouraging greater membership and active participation in Rotary: Rotary Enters Four New Countries in 1953 The chartering of Rotary Clubs in four new countries during the past 12 months - Northern Rhodesia, South West Africa, Surinam and Vietnam - brings the total number of countries and geographical regions in which there are Rotary Clubs to 88. World-Wide Growth Rotary is continuing to grow with amazing rapidity throughout the world. Since the organization of the first Rotary Club in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. on February 23, 1905; the Rotary ideas of friendship, fellowship and service to others have been accepted by men of practically all nationalities, with many different political and religious beliefs. In the past 12 months, 322 Rotary Clubs were organized in 47 countries from Argentina to Wales bringing the total number of Rotary clubs to 7,963 with a membership of 377,001 business and professional executives. 1954 SEATTLE CONVENTION I received from RI a supply of the Seattle Convention hotel forms for those in our District who will attend this year's mammoth confab in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A., on 6-10, June, 1954. If you need the forms, please let me know. ROTARY EXTENSION On this auspicious year marking the 49th anniversary of RI, it behooves all of us to exert extra efforts in pushing the frontiers of Rotary to all conceivable corners of our District. I enjoin all Presidents sponsoring new clubs to submit your recommendations immediately so that I can facilitate their early approval by RI. KOCHI GREETINGS From the President and Secretary of the Rotary Club of Kochi with office at 114, Nakajimacho, Kochi, Japan, I received warm words of felicitations to all Clubs in the District. It may be relevant to pinpoint Kochi for those who are interested in its location. It is at the innermost part of the sunny southern bay in the island of Shikoku. ROTARY FOUNDATION FELLOWS This year there are two Rotary Foundation Fellows with us. One of them, Miss Matilde L.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Montilla, 1951-52 fellow, recently returned from the United States, wrote to me that she is "anxious to attend meetings of the other Rotary Clubs and to talk to them if they so wish." The other is Mr. Jaime E. Dy-Liacco, 1952-53 fellow, is also back with us and is at present working at the Philippines Herald. Miss Montilla and Mr. Dy-Liacco will be available to speak before your club. EXCHANGE TEACHERS Hereunder are the exchange teachers from the United States who are or will be in our District this year, I wish to call your attention the opportunities afforded to you for international ser vice through contacts with these teachers. In many cases exchange teachers have proved to be interesting speakers at Rotary meetings and con. genial visitors in Rotary homes. At the same time Rotary clubs may be of help by arranging contacts and experiences of great value in promoting international understanding. Rotary clubs in the United States and Canada are taking full advantage of and thoroughly enjoying the contacts they are having with teachers from other countries who are spending some time in educational institutions in the U.S.A. and Canada this year. On their return home, exchange teachers often make reports to their local Rotary clubs. Any con. tacts that you may develop with them this can become an additional link in world fellowship.
