520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Apparently it is no longer fashionable for public men to speak out in favor of such old-fashioned virtues as thrift, and local and individual self-reliance and independence. The current mode is to urge that the federal government do practically everything for everybody and, in the process, take more and more of our earnings in taxes. So it is refreshing when a man holding a high political position speaks his mind about the road. we have been traveling as a nation. Governor Lee of Utah did that in a speech. before the National Reclamation Association. He said, "the poorest businessman on earth is the government. You know they have got a mortgage on everything we own in this country that equals about what would be equivalent to a 100 percent mortgage and you know they are spending more than they take in every day of the year. Now you know that isn't good business. "I like a good boxing match or almost any kind of sport. And I can enjoy that game or that sport up to the point where the referee starts choosing sides and then I no longer have any interest in the game. I like the game of life where we compete with each other, in business, for jobs; and I can enjoy it until the government, the referee, begins to choose sides. And I certainly don't want to be a competitor with my government because I will soon be out of business... it is the duty of your government to see that people are treated fairly and that is the kind of government I want and that is the kind I am going to fight for." There is nothing complicated about that, and nothing dramatic. It simply expresses, in simple words, the philosophy that created and built this nation. -Industrial News Review. |
