520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | A very important international event will take place in Manila from May 1 to May 9, 1954. This will be the second Asian games which are under the direct supervision of our fellow Rotarian Jorge B. Vargas, President of the Asian Games Federation.

Writing about the importance of the Asian games, Jorge Vargas said:

"The eyes of all sportsminded Asians will be focused on the Philippines, where Asian Games will be held. This gigantic undertaking in the field of sports will probably be the only one of its kind in the lifetime of a generation. Nothing like it can happen again in this country within the next 36 years for the honor of staging a series of the Games will naturally be sought for by the other nineteen member countries of the Federation.

"The Asian Games Federation, which is an expanded version of the pre-war Far Eastern Championships, was initiated simultaneously but separately by G. D. Sondhi, of India and myself. The move to form an Asian Games Federation which would include almost all Asiatic countries was motivated by the desire to encourage understanding, goodwill and closer relationships among the many nations in this portion of the globe.
"Through the wholesome medium of athletic competition, it is the purpose of the Federation to draw closer to each other the problems of Asia and to help establish a stronger unity and more lasting peace."

As we believe that this important event is of general interest, we are reproducing the program of the different events for the convenience of our fellow Rotarians. To those Rotarians that are directly connected with the organization of the Second Asian Games — George Vargas, Pete Teodoro, RR de la Cruz, Ben Legarda, Ike Icasiano, Vic Buencamino, Manoling Lim, Jonby Carlos, Dan Gomez, Polding Rovira, Jimmy Velasquez, Dalup Dalupan — Balita wishes an outstanding success.

PROGRAMME

Entries
Maximum number of entries: one team of 14 players of whom 12 are entered in each game.

REGULATIONS

The technical organization of the Second Asian Basketball Tournament is in the hands of the Asian Games Basketball Federation. The latest playing rules of the International Amateur Basketball Federation will be in force. Each nation must submit to the National Basketball Federation by April 1st 1954, the name and capacity of its official representative. This representative must possess the written authority of the National Olympic Committee.

The nature of the tournament will be decided by the Asian Games Basketball Federation. The official representatives of the participating countries must attend the draws, whenever necessary. The first draw will take place on Wednesday, April 21st, at 9:00 o'clock at the Press Room, Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation.
Each team will be granted a rest interval of at least 24 hours between two matches, if possible. The A.G.B.F., however, reserves the right to make exceptions to this rule.

The Asian Games Basketball Federation appoints the referees, scorers and time-keepers. A referee may not officiate at matches in which his own country is participating. The A.G.B.F. will nominate 10 official referees and each participating country is further invited to nominate a referee of its own. The scorers and the time-keepers shall be nationals of the Philippines.

Protests regarding the amateur status of a participant, also complaints and appeals of all kinds are to be dealt with in accordance with articles 35, 36, 47 and 48 of the Asian Games. Federation Rules.
Protests will be decided by a Jury of Appeal appointed by the A.G.B.F. and consisting of five titular members and of two substitutes of different nationalities.

Each nation has the right to place on the field for each match whatever team it wishes with a maximum of 12 players. Each team will wear the colours of its country, which are to be notified to the Organizing Committee by April 1st, 1954. Should the colours of two teams be likely to lead to confusion in a match, the team mentioned. first in the official programme must change its colours.

Each referee must wear a vertical white and black uniform, long white flannel trousers and basketball shoes.

The decision of the National Basketball Federation will be final in all cases not covered by these regulations.

SATURDAY, MAY 1
4:00 p.m. OPENING CEREMONY
Track-Football Stadium

5:00 p.m. MASS DEMONSTRATION
Track-Football Stadium

7:00 p.m. FOOTBALL—Elimination
(2 Matches)
Track-Football Stadium

7:00 p.m. WRESTLING—Qualification (Free Style)
Open Arena

SUNDAY, MAY 2
9:00 a.m. BASKETBALL—Qualification
Coliseum
2 games 1st Series

10:00 a.m. TRACK AND FIELD
Track-Football Stadium.
High Jump — Qualification
Heights: 1.60; 1.70; 1.80; 1.84
Limit: 1.84

2:00 p.m. BASKETBALL—Qualification
4 games 1st Series

2:45 p.m. Broad Jump (Women) — Final

3:00 p.m. 100-Meter Dash Trials

3:30 p.m. 100-Meter Dash (Women) —Trials

3:45 p.m. 1,500-Meter Run — Final

4:00 p.m. Broad Jump — Final

4:15 p.m. 400-Meter Run — Trials

4:30 p.m. 80 Meter Hurdles — Trials

4:30 p.m. High Jump — Final

4:45 p.m. 200-Meter Dash (Women) — Trials.

5:00 p.m. 200-Meter Dash — Trials

7:00 p.m. FOOTBALL — Elimination (2 Matches)
Track-Football Stadium

7:00 p.m. WRESTLING — Qualification
(Free Style)
Open Arena

MONDAY, MAY 3
9:00 a.m. SHOOTING Mariquina Ranges

9:00 a.m. BASKETBALL — Qualification
Coliseum
2 games 1st Series

2:00 p.m. BASKETBALL — Qualification
Coliseum
4 games 1st Series

2:30 p.m. TRACK AND FIELD
Track-Football Stadium

2:30 p.m. 400-Meter Hurdles — Trials

2:30 p.m. Discus Throw (Women) — Final

2:45 p.m. 100-Meter Dash — Semi-finals

3:00 p.m. 200-Meter Dash (Women) — Final

3:15 pm. 5,000-Meter Run — Final

3:30 p.m. 80-Meter Hurdles (Women) — Final

3:45 p.m. 400-Meter Run — Semi-finals

4:00 p.m. High Jump (Women) — Final

4:00 p.m. 200-Meter Dash — Semi-finals

4:15 pm. 400-Meter Run — Semi-finals

2:30 p.m. TRACK AND FIELD

2:45 p.m. 110-Meter Hurdles — Trials

2:30 p.m. Discus Throw — Final
4:30 p.m. Hammer Throw — Final

4:45 p.m. 800-Meter Run — Trials

5:00 p.m. 4 x 100-Meter Relay — Final

7:00 p.m. FOOTBALL — Elimination
(2 Matches)
Track-Football Stadium

7:00 p.m. WRESTLING — Qualification
(Free Style)
Open Arena

TUESDAY, MAY 4
9:00 a.m. SHOOTING Mariquina Ranges.

9:00 a.m. BASKETBALL — Qualification
Coliseum
2 games 1st Series

10:00 a.m. DECATHLON— 100-Meter Dash
Track-Football Stadium

10:30 a.m. DECATHLON — Broad Jump

2:00 pm.
