Service

Description: page 2 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 600 to 623Summary: "Service above self"-a lovely phrase-a splendid motto. We all believe (and honestly) that we strive to reach this ideal. But do we really try? How many of us, faced with the possible loss of a client, an order, a position, would hold fast to the ideal and forget the financial interest? Justice George Malcolm told us last Thursday of his efforts to serve the people of Puerto Rico and the cause of Democracy by insisting upon freedom of the press and freedom of speech in the face of the direct disapproval of the Governor-his efforts cost him his job. He has, since that time, seen his efforts bear fruit and his stand justified. Also, he has been what he terms "lucky" in many ways, including finances. But we wonder if, at the time he knew his position was in jeopardy, he didn't show some very real hesitation at standing his ground. Don't you suppose he was a bit worried and questioned the worth of the struggle? Maybe a man with as strong convictions as George Malcolm wouldn't hesitate-but what of the rest of us? "Service above self" is not just a motto. It is a guide to a most satisfying way of life.
