Realizing the information alone was likely to be dull, she covered many topics of interest, from the convention to bull fights in Spain and Night clubs in London, etc. She demonstrated her ability as aspeaker, by giving colour to pale generalities, adding humour, and inspiration to her talk which amused all those present and made her a welcomed speaker. “In Spain,” she said, “the laws against immodest dressing are very strict. Plunging necklines, and bare shoulders are definitely prohibited. When going to church, women are requested to we highnecked dresses and elbow-length sleeves. at the beaches, ladies are not permitted to wear bare midriffs or two-piece bathing suits. “One day,” she said, “a young girl went to the beach wearing a Bikini bathing suit. When the guard saw her, he said, ‘Don’t you know that the laws in this country requires you to use only a onepiece bathing suit?’ ‘Is that so’, answered the girl, ‘I'm sorry, I didn’t know that. Which of these two pieces shall I remove?’ “In London,” she continued, “we went to the Embassy Club to celebrate my daughter's birthday. It is a very exclusive night club where only diplomats and high ranking officers go. When the stage show began, a very pretty girl, called Julie Wilson, performed a number, and asked for the coOperation of the guests. Imagine my surprise when she chose Ben for her partner to odo a Mexican dance. Imagine picking Ben, when there were Secretary ‘Tiving’ Lovina and Minister Romero to pick from and whom we know are ‘ladies’ men." “In the States,” she added, “we attended the Rotary International Convention which was held in Detroit, Michigan. There were thousands of Rtarians and their Anns from all corners of the world. The beauty of it was, that We greeted each others as we had been long life friends. here was a place called, ‘The House of Friendship' beautifully decorated with flags of all nations. How proud I was to see our Philippine flag hoisted amongst them. In Detroit, the Anns are not organized as we are here, but, they are always depended on by the Rotarians, During the Convention, the Anns were very efficient on Information Service. They took care of accommodations, missing persons, lost articles, etc. Their organization during the Convention was perfect. “We missed the President’s Ball of the Convention due to my son’s graduation at Harvard University. That day I will long remember not only because my son graduated, but because on that day our own Carlos P. Romulo was conferred an HONORIS CAUSA degree. There was a catch in my throat when he received the longest ovation from the multitude that jammed the Harvard yard. “One of the highlights of my trip was in Texas. A Texan asked me if it wasn’t true that the Philippines was turning communist, if it was true that our economy was unstable, and that our Government was full of corruption and graft. To these questions I answered that I could not be expected to give any answers that would discredit my and my people. “Apparently, news of my attitude reached London, because when I arrived there, Consul Espeleta greeted me with. . . ‘So you’ve turned pro-Quirino,’ to which replied, ‘I’m not pro nor anti, I was just behaving as I thought all Filipinos should behave when travelling on foreign soil.’ If there are any dirty national linen to be washed, we should do it at home, not in public.” These are simple words that reflect her character and background. One great trait in Trining’s character is, ... that she accepts good and bad fortune with dignity and grace, which is an endowment of good breeding and the product of mental maturity. We are indeed proud to have her as a friend and as the president. of the association of which we are proud to belong.Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
