Cogs in the wheel - The Rotary Balita no. 684 (November 8, 1951) / Joe P. Bautista
Description: page 18-20 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 675 to 698Summary: Rotarians joined other organizations in doing all that could be done for the relief of 11-month-old Elvira Difuntorum, the baby who swallowed pins-fed by her brother. Rotarians "Gumer" Garcia, Doe Ayesa and Veep Paul Parrette contacted Consul Leopoldo Ruiz in Chicago (a Chicago Rotarian) and RI Secretary Phil Lovejoy who made arrangements with Dr. Hollinger, also another Rotarian and famous bronchoscopist, to operate on Baby Elvira free of charge. In addition, Rotarian Doc Ayesa, club secretary, revealed that Rotary is financing the two-way trip of Dr. Jose R. Reyes, NGH director, who is buying some needed equipment in the States for his hospital. As this issue goes to press, Manila Rotary has received news that Baby Elvira's pin located in her left lung was successfully: removed in an operation which lasted only fifty-nine seconds. The "pin" baby is reportedly doing well and will be home in one week's time. --- As the thoughts of the nation turned on the Boy Scouts of the Philippines on the occasion of its 28th anniversary, the memory of a deceased Rotarian, Col. J. E. H. Stevenot, one of the founders of the organization, was also recalled. Known as the Father of the Philippine Boy Scout Movement, the late Stevenot was a Rotarian who was happiest when serving his fellowmen. --- Enrique "Lorry" Lolarga, deputy national scout commissioner, arrived after a three- month sojourn abroad. He was a member of the Philippine delegation to the 13th International Scout Conference. --- Francisco "Dalup" Dalupan added another feather to the University of the East's cap when graduates of his university copped top honors in the latest CPA examination. --- Beaming from ear to ear is Manuel P "Manny" Manahan for the construction of a modern printing plant at Quezon City. Manny is the publisher of the Bagong Buhay and manages the PSP Press. --- "Balmy" Balmaceda was the guest speaker of the Malolos Rotarians on their United Nations Week celebration. --- A pun may be the worst form of humor but we cannot help observing that Jorge "George" B. Vargas must have got a big kick when he opened the 6-game series played in Manila by the Chinese Malayan football team.Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
