Cogs in the wheel - The Rotary Balita no. 635 (December 8, 1949)

Description: page 17-20 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: Two More Feathers In addition to the three Rotarians mentioned in the last Balita as being on the Board of Directors of the Community Chest (Gil Puyat, Charlie Hirst, and Bob Trent) Rotary has two more members on the Board: Manoling Lim and Yang Sepeng. Expert Controllers Imported Among the Wack-Wackians who helped advertise the Philippines last month were several popular, hardworking Rotarians. AP Reyes, Chairman of the Executive Committee out at Wack Wack, was the impresario who with his assistants inveigled up to 5,000 persons to pay P10 for one day's privilege of trudging up and down hill. Yoyong Rodriguez, President of the Board, directed the plan of hiring a group of men to play a game-something the rest of us pay for the privilege of doing. Pete Lim, Chairman of the Sub-committee on Finance, raised the funds to import the controlled players by air express. Lorry Lolarga, Secretary-Treasurer, helped distribute the P35,000 to buy foreign exchange, plus some P9,000 pocket money. Jimmie Norton, also on the Board of Directors, approved the idea of importing experts to defeat our local golfers. Quitong Reyes, Chairman of the Starting and Pairing Committee, provided the alibi of poor placement for all the tournament losers. Doc Ayesa, Chairman of the First-Aid Committee, distributed corn plasters to the spectators and aspirin to the other committee members. Joe Barredo, Chairman of the Transportation Committee, with his free rides, established a new low for his taxi company's income per kilometer. Jack Preysler, Chairman of the Sponsor- ship Committee, went out and induced six firms to sponsor the pros for this match, when all along we had thought it was being sponsored by Wack-Wack. Is That So? "If only 10 people see your ad in this space during the lifetime of this directory, there would be a total of 150,000 prospects that have read your message." -An advertisement in the telephone directory of Tea Hall and Pepe Galvez, printed by Ramon Ordoveza. Unfair Competition While Nena del Rosario, the girl prodigy who captivated an audience at New York's Carnegie Hall, was honoring Manila Rotary at the piano two weeks ago, and while even the waiters waited aside, four competing Rotarians carried on a lively discussion, sotto voce. From the rest of us, thanks to Ben Legarda for arranging this musical treat. No Vacancy Fernando Ocampo is this month permitting tenants to move into his specially de- signed, modern apartment building, the Del Pilar, even though some of the gadgets have not yet been installed. Attendance, Both Here and There For posterity, the names of the following attendance record holders are inscribed on the Forrest Myers cup; -for themselves, each winner has received the Dinny Gunn award, a Rotary tie-clasp: 1945-46 Dave Gunnell 100% Lorry Lolarga 100% 1946-47 Ted Hall 104% 1947-48 Bert Parsons 114% 1948-49 Emy Javier 109% Or Opportunity for Rebuttal The practice which President Balmy has adopted of designating one Rotarian each week to give a short response to the day's address adds an appreciative dignity to our meeting. Did you notice how fittingly EA Perkins two weeks ago, and Bob Trent last week, handled this little chore?
