Report of meetings : February 23, 1950 (45th anniversary of Rotary International)
Description: page 7-8 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: It was gala day at the Fiesta Pavilion with elegantly-dressed Rotary Anns gracing the occasion. Rotarians who failed to bring their Rotary Anns, even if they didn't have them, were fined a peso apiece. "Conrado" Benitez, who has been roving around the world as special envoy of the Republic of the Philippines to the ILO conferences, was the guest speaker. He spoke on "A Philippine Rotarian's Adventure in the 4th Object of Rotary." "Conrado" reviewed the history of Rotary International and cited its spectacular growth and expansion to the four corners of the earth. Then he dwelt on his experiences at Rotary meetings abroad, and on his impressions on foreign clubs. He said he was greatly impressed by the "fellowship in action" which he saw in the United States. He pointed out that the "Philippine Story" is still very much of a drawing card in the U.S., and expressed the hope that it would be capitalized upon to the full. He concluded by emphasizing the role that Philippine Rotary could play in Southeast Asia, by focusing attention on democratic processes and taking the initiative in imparting democratic ideas to sister-Rotary Clubs in Asia. "Emy" Javier, district governor, made the response to the speech of "Conrado," and earned the wholehearted applause of everyone by making a one-sentence speech. "Ted" Hall, our walking encyclopedia, was called upon to speak on the "Kinds of Membership in a Rotary Club." He spoke to the point, and within the time limit. He was NOT fined. Next week's subject is: "The First Object of Rotary." For the information of the guests and Rotary Anns, President "Balmy" announced that at the last meeting, it was unanimously voted that every Rotarian would donate ten pesos a month in order to finance worthwhile civic projects of "Ted" Hall's vocational service committee. "Balmy" also announced that very recently, the City of Manila adopted a measure which will raise more than P1,000,000 for the purpose of purchasing garbage cans and other sanitation supplies and equipment, in line with the sanitation projects initiated by the Sanitation Committee of Manila Rotary, headed by "Ike" Icasiano. It will be recalled that this project was the outcome of the sanitation committee's planning, with the mayor and other city officials of Manila present as guests at the planning meeting. Bonifacio Villanueva, tenor, interpreted two songs.Item type | Current library | Call number | Copy number | Status | Barcode | |
