Report of meetings : March 2, 1950

Description: page 3-4 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: After nine years, Manila Rotary resumed its meeting at the Winter Garden of the Manila Hotel today. Notwithstanding the pleasant surroundings, the program and housing chairmen, as well as the manager of the Manila Hotel, did not escape fines this noon, for not arranging the seats and tables in a more appropriate manner. Special guests today were heads of various Jaycee delegations attending the 5th World Congress of Jaycee International in Manila. "Gene" Puyat, Jaycee executive vice-president presented the Jaycee delegates. "Gene," in his remarks, put in a plug for Puyat & Sons, but successfully evaded being fined because of the excellent speech he delivered. Among the Jaycees who spoke were: Rotarian "Totti" Eraña who made the response, Mr. Hubert Harvey of Australia, Mr. Harry Klein, a Rotarian from Alhambra Rotary Club (California), Mr. Leon Cordier of Belgium, Mayor W. W. Fuller, a Rotarian from Sioux Lookout Rotary Club (Canada), and Mr. Robert A. Ziegler of Switzerland. Rotarians were well impressed by both the substance of the Jaycees' remarks, and the magnificent delivery which characterized each. Everyone expressed appreciation of the "wonderful reception" the Philippines was extending to them. Among the Jaycee delegates were a few who were also Rotarians, and who extended to Manila Rotary the greetings of their respective clubs. Mr. Hubert Harvey of Australia said the Philippine government should be commended for taking the necessary steps in stabilizing the economic position of the country. He cited the economic history of Australia, particularly following the First World War, and pointed out that economic restrictions resulted in the development of Australia's secondary industries. He foresaw that Philippine industries would accelerate as a of current import curbs. In connection with the weekly "Lessons in Rotary," President Balmy called on "Ben" Legarda to speak on the "First Object of Rotary." ""Ben" came through with the goods, with the assistance of notes prepared by "Doc" Ayesa. "Ben" was not fined for using "Doc's" notes. It was "Doc" who had to come across with P3.00 for serving as "Ben's" tutor. "Ben" protested on behalf of "Doc," and was promptly fined P2.00 for protesting. President Balmy also announced that Manila Rotary would be represented by three delegates to the International Rotary Convention in Detroit, Michigan, next June. Anyone who is available is to get in touch with him. So, far, "Pad" Padua has announced his availability. It was also announced that the District Conference in Davao City is scheduled for April 28-29. Rotarians and Rotary Anns were invited. "Totti" Eraña was supposed to respond to the Jaycee speakers, and surprised everyone with a well-delivered speech. He was commended for his remarks, and fined P1.00 for forgetting to respond. Just before the meeting adjourned, President Balmy presented "Bob" Trent who was seated at the head table. Bob belongs to the "exhausted Rooster" of Jaycee. He was among the founders of Jaycees in the Philippines but had to join the "Exhausted Rooster" because of old age. Time marches on!
