Report of meetings : March 30, 1950

Description: page 3-4 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: This was one of the best meetings of Manila Rotary, according to several members. A magnificent speech by the guest of honor, Dr. Charles Tambu, charge d'affaires of the Indonesian Embassy; three beautiful songs superbly interpreted by Conchita Gaston, outstanding Filipino diva; a brilliant 3-minute talk on "What Rotary Means To Me" by Hans Menzi; a P25.00 fine imposed on Past Governor "Marianito" Lichauco for graduating from the Adamson University as Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service. What more could one ask for? Dr. Tambu's speech, delivered in flawless Oxonian English, made such a powerful impression on the Rotarians; it received a tremendously long and enthusiastic applause. The Indonesian diplomat speaking on "Indonesia In Flux," laid bare the problems that now confront the infant Republic, clearly outlined the policy of his government, and plainly revealed the stand of Indonesia on the matter of unions and military pacts. He said Indonesia is determined to solve her internal problems first, does not intend to be distracted from this job by participation in military alliances with other nations. Low Wagner delivered the response. Miss Conchita Gaston, who is a Rotary Ann in her own right, being a sister of Past District Governor Ben Gaston, interpreted three songs-a kundiman, a Spanish melody, and a ballad in English. She was accompanied on the piano by Ben Tupas, brilliant Filipino pianist. Both were recipients of souvenirs from Rotary. presented towards the end of the meeting by President Balmy. Hans Menzi, called upon to deliver the usual 3-minute talk, spoke with exceptional eloquence and deep feeling. He impressed everyone with his magnificent delivery, sincerity and excellent choice of words. President Balmy said Hans was "unduly inspired" (with a significant look at Miss Boston. Several Rotarians who recently received distinctions for outstanding performance in business in 1949, and who were honored by the Business Writers' Association of the Philippines, were cited by President Balmy. Requested to rise and take a bow, they were warmly applauded. These Rotarians were: Frederic H. Stevens, Trade Leader of the Year; John W. Haussermann, Gold Producer of the Year; Ramon V. del Rosario, Young Business Man of the Year; Juan F. Nakpil, Commercial-Industrial Architect of the Year; Peter Lim, Tobacco Manufacturer of the Year; Frank Liddell, Automotive Man of the Year; Carlos Palanca Jr., Wine Manufacturer of the Year; C. S. Gonzales, Realtor of the Year; Francisco T. Lopez, of Mayon Metal Windows Factory; and Rafael Anton, of Movietec. President Balmy announced that the Outstanding Rotarian of the 48th District would receive an award donated by Past Governor Marianito Lichauco. A plaque will be presented to the club to which the Outstanding Rotarian belongs. It was also announced by President Balmy that "Peg" Green has donated diphtheria vaccine for 1,000 children. The vaccine is now en route to the Philippines from U. S. To help fight against diphtheria, Manila Rotary is launching a campaign for funds.
