What Rotary means to me / by Alva J. Hill

By: Description: page 19-21 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: Rotary costs each of us not less than P400.00 in cash and 250 hours of our time each year. Is it worth it? Does it mean anything to you to eat lunch every Thursday with your banker, your doctor, your lawyer, groceryman, druggist; with practically every business and professional men with whom you have transactions? Is it worthwhile to be able to call up "Cal" or "Fay" or "Byron" and make a date to enter their private offices and arrange your banking problems, instead of standing in line, and then deal with subordinate clerks? If you wish to book passage on a boat or plane, do you appreciate the privilege of phoning to a Fellow Rotarian, and then receive the personal attention of the head of the office? If you need dental or medical attention, isn't it nice to know that we have doctors and dentists in our Club who will give us prompt, efficient, personal attention at a reasonable price? Aren't you glad to know that you can telephone your grocery order to a Fellow Rotarian and be sure that you will get the best of service? Whatever your need may be, isn't it consoling to know that you have a complete directory of your. Fellow Rotarians, whom you know intimately, who are willing and able to give you prompt friendly service? There is no need too small or too big for them to attend to courteously, efficiently and promptly. When I need a law book that I don't have, I never hesitate to call up "EA" and ask permission to consult his well-equipped library, for I know I will be welcome. Our Rotarians are busy men; big men in their line of work. They were carefully screened by our Committees to guarantee that they are eminently qualified to represent their line of business. We are lucky to be able to talk over our personal problems with such men as "Balmy" or "Boone," "Tiving," or "Totti," "Vic," or "Vince," and be sure they will be most informal and friendly. If we are just lonesome and want to chat with a friend, it is worth a lot to be able to call up any one of over a hundred Rotarians and know they will listen to our personal problems and make us glad that we are Rotarians. What does Rotary mean to me when the President of the United Nations slaps me on the back and says, "Hello, Alva; how glad I am to see you again. If I can ever do anything for you, don't hesitate to let me know." To me Rotary is profitable from every view point: financially, socially and in personal satisfaction. If I should ever be forced to give up any of my activities, I hope that Rotary will be the last.
