Report of meetings : April 23, 1953 / "Manny" Manahan.

Description: page 3-4 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 699 to 723Summary: "We do not seek to impose our way of life on other people, but we do not like other people to impose their way of life on us," declared former Ambassador Paul V. MeNutt. Paul V. McNutt, former American ambassador to the Philippines and at present board chairman of the Philippine American. Life Insurance Company, expressed high hopes that world peace would be maintained. He however urged that the democratic nations stand firm and always alert to meet the dangers brought about by communist aggression. He also mentioned that with the change of leadership in Russia and the current exchange of prisoners in Korea, the prospects of peace are much better now than before. He expressed high hopes that the initial exchange of prisoners in Korea would lead to a general exchange of POWs that would lead to an early end to the present Korean war. McNutt said that in 1914, people wondered if the world could stand another war. When the armistice was signed in 1919, the world sighed with relief, but the people had to face the great problem of reconstruction and other problems brought about by the war. He traced the struggles of humanity up to 1929 when another war broke out leading to the rise of totalitarianism in Germany, Italy and Japan. He admitted that the Russian threat is more dangerous to the concept of one world and to the dignity of the human spirit than totalitarianism ever was. McNutt lauded Ambassador Carlos Romulo for his good work in the United Nations. He expressed disappointment when Romulo was not elected secretary-general of the United Nations assembly. He said Romulo had rendered valuable services for his country and the world in the halls of the United Nations. For not being prepared, all the members of the fines committee were each fined P50.00. Nick Jacinto who attended the Rotary meeting in Baguio but was not included in the guest list, was fiped P100.00.
