Editorial - The Rotary Balita no. 647 (June 1, 1950)

Description: page 2, 13 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: In the daily papers we read vivid accounts about the Ohio State "eleven" and the California "eleven"; about the Army and Navy "elevens", the Notre Dame, Illinois, and Ann Arbor "elevens", but we seldom read about the "leaven" which the Philippine Christian schools are injecting into their pupils, causing them to rise to higher levels of usefulness in their respective communities. The good results of that inspiration instilled into the pupils of our private Christian schools is plainly visible. The setting aside of special war damage allotments for those schools is an appropriate recognition of their valuable services. The good that is being accomplished is not limited to any particular sect. We have many splendid Catholic colleges turning out graduates filled with the "leaven" of Christianity. Likewise, alumni of Silliman University and the Central Philippine College in the Visayas, the Ifugao Academy at Kiangan, the Academy at Lubuangan among the Kalingas, the Sagada School in the Igorote territory, and the Protestant schools in Manila are yearly sending ambassadors of goodwill out among the non-Christians to teach the mountain peoples the same lessons of unselfish service which we Rotarians advocate in our weekly meetings. May the "leaven" of Christianity rise to the present emergency and check the spread of the communistic ideology, which, if unopposed, would eliminate the Christian religion and suppress suppress the activities of Rotary.
