Report of meetings : May 25, 1950 / by Ernie del Rosario
In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: This was a day for classification talk, an opportunity for Rotarians to tell all about their business or profession to fellow Rotarians. "Purico" Parrette, vice-president and general manager of Philippine Manufacturing Co., took full advantage of it. Holding on to the mike for dear life, "Purico" told everybody all about the products of his firm and went further to trace its ancestry to the original Procter & Gamble. It was publicity worth a thousand pesos and it was with an eye to justice tempered with mercy that President "Balmy" Balmaceda imposed a fine of P100 on "Purico." President "Balmy" had just come back from the ECAFE conference in Bangkok. "Purico" deplored the lack of effort to increase and improve local copra and coconut production which "gives the country a P150,000,000 income every year." He said that with a well-devised plan and continuous and aggressive follow-through, coconut production could prove a greater dollar-producing potential than most of the manufacturing plants which have been given much publicity. It was Ladies' Day and the Rotarians came with their balls and chains, the Rotary Anns. Those who didn't have one lame excuse or another, but sighed in relief when President "Balmy" overlooked fining them for the "mortal sin." That was probably because President "Balmy" was too happy with his own Rotary Ann. Leading 48 other Rotarians with their Rotary Anns, President "Balmy" and his R.A. were awarded a plaque "for being married 25 years or more." That is an accomplishment. As "Peg" Green told the younger folk, "That's something for you to shoot at." "Peg" and his Rotary Ann also got a plaque. The Rotary Anns at the luncheon meeting clapped 49 times in greeting to the "happily married for 25 years Rotarians and Rotary Anns." That was another achievement. (A complete list of the plaque recipients will be published in the next issue of the "Balita.") Among other guests were 15 boy scouts who will represent the Philippines in the International Jamboree at Valley Forge, Virginia, who were scheduled to leave on the s.s. President Cleveland. Sponsored by "Pete" Teodoro, a new heavyweight baby Rotarian was inducted in the person of "Ralph" Hawkins, managing editor of the Evening News. "Ralph" is the third newspaperman to become a baby Rotarian within three weeks.Item type | Current library | Call number | Copy number | Status | Barcode | |
