Cogs in the wheel : The Rotary Balita no. 701 (July 31, 1953) / Joe P. Bautista
Description: page 20-22 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 700 to 723Summary: The Knights of Rizal, headed by our own "Juanito" Nakpil, had for guest speaker the other day Senator Jose P. Laurel who spoke on the virtues of the Martyr of Bagumbayan. Senator "Gil" Puyat, in his speech before engineers at the offices of "Ted" Hall's telephone company, deplored the fact that Congress gives less to important departments like agriculture and natural resources. Eventually we might have three university presidents in the Manila Rotary fold. We already have "Elbi" Monzon, president of the M.L.Q. Educational Institutions (which will soon be converted into a university, we've heard), and "Dalup" Dalupan, bumbling president of the University of the East. Now a group of Silliman U alumni are boosting "Emy" Javier to head the fine institution in Dumaguete City. It's a good sign of something or other, if you ask us. As if ‘Joe Barredo” isn’t enough singing talent in our club, “Leroy” Young has to add his voice, too. "Leroy" will be one of the chorus which will soon be heard in the Far Eastern University in a Chopiniana recital of the Manila Symphony Orchestra. The 1953 Manila International Fair of "Balmy" Balmaceda and "Arsenic" Luz is proceeding beautifully. Almost all the provinces and business firms have pledged to participate, to make the fair a memorable one. Even firms abroad have signified willingness to participate. Welcome to "Lino" Neri, personable under secretary of foreign affairs, who returned with the President from a trip to Indonesia. We are sure Lino is now full of ideas on how to bring the Philippines and her Asian neighbors closer. Diplomatic relations with Burma will soon be established, Lino assures. Okay, the more the merrier. "Ben" Legarda has done it again. He was named chairman, for a term of three years, of the first board of examiners for chemist pursuant to Republic Act No. 754, approved last June 18. Re-elected president, general manager and treasurer of Philippine Educational Co. w "Dave" Gunnell. Another Rotarian, P "Danding" Romualdez, was returned to the board of directors of this well known firm, a landmark in the Philippines' business world. Dave, in his annual report, bewailed the losses suffered by his firm due to the import controls and decisions of the court of industrial relations prohibiting it from effecting economies by slashing personnel The small boy approached the big house with some hesitancy and when the elderly lady came to the door said in anxiety, "Car I get my other arrow back?" The lady said somewhat curtly, "I guess so, where is it?" "Well," the small voice added, "it kinda got stuck in your cat."Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
