The Rotary Balita No. 624 to 649Summary: OUR REPRESENTATIVES Official Manila delegates to the Rotary International convention now meeting in Detroit are Ben Legarda, Pad Padua, and Gary Yupangco. These three delegates are accredited from Manila at the standard ratio of one delegate for each 50 members or major fraction thereof. While at the convention, President-elect Ben and his RA, President-elect Trining of the Manila Inner Wheel, are hoping to arrange for a unique husband-and-wife induction to their new offices for the coming year. They expect to return to their presidencies in Manila within a few weeks. LAST REMINDER The next issue of the BALITA will carry the new club roster. If during 1950 there has been any change in your home or office address or telephone number, be sure to notify Mr. Dedal at once. PEPE GALVEZ From Pepe Galvez comes the following letter to the Board of Directors: "Due to my failing health I will request for an indefinite leave of absences effective immediately. Wishing you and all my fellow Rotarians continued success in all your endeavors. "Pepe" To you. Pepe, best wishes for a speedy recovery. ALL THIS AND EVEN MORE Following is a partial list of accomplishments of our community Service Commit tee, under the general chairmanship of Ted Hall this Rotary year: Canes for the Blind and Disabled Committee, Ramon Oriol, chairman, has collected funds for and distributed 50 black and white striped canes to the blind, and 6 pairs of crutches to crippled hospital patients. Rolfing Gonzales of the Crippled Children Committee, has operated without charge on 10 children who were helpless cripples but who are now walking. The Committee has arranged for hospital services to be given without cost to the children. AP Reyes, chairman of the Eve glasses for Deserving Students Committee, has examined numerous children, and the committee has furnished glasses to 102 poor and deserving children. The Gloria Cruz Special Fund Committee. Ad Adriano, chairman, upon the graduation from college cum laude of Gloria Crus, blind protege of Manila Rotary, presented her with a portable typewriter and typewriter table, and obtained for her a scholarship in the Perkins Institute, Watertown, Mass, and a travel grant to reach the school. Through radio announcements and appeals, the Handicapped Persons Placement Committee, Bill Dunn, chairman, have helped obtain work for many veterans and others who had been rehabilitated at the National Orthopedic Hospital. The Police Stands and City Beautification Committee, Juanito Nakpil, chairman, have placed orange colored "Scotch light" reflecting strips on the police stand at the corner of Taft Avenue and Ayala Boulevard, as an experiment to facilitate night safety, since the city has no funds to provide traffic lights. The Philippine National Red Cross Committee, Ted Hall, chairman, collected from Rotarians an amount considerably in excess of the quota assigned to the Rotary Club. The Sanitation Committee, Ike Icasiano, chairman, invited his Honor the Mayor, the President of the Municipal Board, the heads of welfare organizations, and newspapermen to a dinner, where sanitation conditions in Manila were discussed frankly and openly. As a result, a number of new garbage trucks were purchased by the City and an ordinance was drafted, passed, and signed, which will result in a greatly improved garbage-collection system. Under the direction of Yan Yanzon and ably assisted by Ike Icasiano, a Christmas package was presented to each of the garbage collectors. The Student Assistance Committee, Villa Villacorta, chairman, after studying the needs of students in a number of schools, is preparing a recommendation for the help of a self-supporting student at Los Baños Agricultural College, and a non-Christian student at the Normal School. The Thrift Committee, Byron Ford, chairman, distributed thrift pamphlets to the City high schools. The Traffic Safety Committee, Sergio Bayan, chairman, recommended the Traffic Court, now operating; designed pictorial road signs, now being considered by the Philippine Motor Association; obtained an improved designing of the safety islands near the City Hall, and placed "Keep Right" signs near the same; and were instrumental in having a hazardous pole at the corner of P. Burgos and Calle Concepcion removed. The Vocational Guidance Committee, Doctor Adamson, chairman, has held 4 convocations, in high schools and with 300 hospitalized soldiers at Fort McKinley. The Youth Committee, Basky Bascara, chairman, provided a piano for Boys' Town, and sponsored visits of foreign students in Filipino homes, Boys and Girls Week, and Citizen and Constitution Day. The Committee on Medals for Heroism and/or Meritorious Service, Pepe Galvez, chairman, presented a citation to Mr. Irving Hart for his activities in behalf of harelip cases and his Band of Mercy. FEATHER IN GIL'S CAP Last week the Red Feather agencies executives awarded to Gil Puyat a plaque for outstanding service to the Community Chest in 1949. Ambassador Cowen presented the plaque at a meeting at the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Building. OUR OWN "RED FEATHER" Expenses for community service, which includes the charities of Manila Rotary Club, in the 11 months ending May, amounted to P6,741.00, according to our Assistant Secretary Treasurer, Mr. Dedal. Of this amount, P2,489.55 was specially donated by Rotarians to the Community Service Committee. It is of interest to note that during the same 11 months, club fines, which are used for charity, amounted to P638.20. In addition to the above, P717.15 has been contributed to the Diphtheria Fund, which is being spent to provide anti-diphtheria toxin. UP BASKY Meeting reports are now being prepared by Basky Bascara. These reports provide a convenient record, if you keep the BALITA on file, and are of especial interest to any Rotarian who might be obliged to miss a meeting. The way Basky writes, a meeting report makes engaging reading any day. 1941 PLUS ONE When the war broke out in 1941, Manila Rotary had 150 members. Last week, Fergie Ferguson was inducted as Rotarian No. 150, and Tito Manahan became No. 151. How many can you call by name? HERE ARE THE ANSWERS A veritable encyclopedia of Rotary is the new 157-page mimeographed book of 643 questions and answers recently completed by ex-Governor Marianito Lichauco. For more than two years, Marianito has been collecting questions asked by Rotarians, weighing his answers against official Rotary publications, and putting all the principles and regulations governing Rotary International into question and answer form. Questions with answers make for palatable reading. If one is looking for date regarding a specific problem on Rotary, a complete index in the new book provides a ready key to locate the answer. Marianito is considering publication of the book in printed form. In the meantime, Manila Rotary is fortunate in having one or two copies of Questions and Answers on Rotary in the club library, available for ready reference of committee chairmen and all Rotarians. Ask for it from Mr. Dedal. AS OTHERS SEE US Much-traveled Rotary Evaluator Ted Hall reports that the one criticism of Manila Rotary which he hears again and again is that as a club we are not mindful of visiting Rotarians. Let's each of us do something to correct this disagreeable reputation.
