The present Sunsets are Tim Certeza, Chairman, Mike Arnold, and Ralph Rebullida. "The Most International Club" President Ben recently read a letter from Fred Fisher, who is one of our few honorary members, and now living in San Anselmo, California. Fred calls Manila Rotary the most truly international club he has known. Placed as we are at the crossroad of the Pacific, this is a characterizations cherish and develop even further and together. Only really old-timers will remember Fred Fisher. He came to the Philippines at the end of the last century, and after the war (with Farmer John) joined in organizing the law firm of Haussermann, Cohn and Fisher. When Farmer John went into the mining business, our own EA Perkins joined the firm, together with others, and it was called Fisher, DeWitt, Perkins and Brady. Today, the firm continues under the name of Perkins, Ponce Enrile, and Contreras. On The Way Back We are happy to learn that Gene Puyat has now left the hospital and may soon be back with us. During his absence we have missed his Gene-ish style of reporting weekly meetings in the BALITA. Basky Bascara has been doing a splendid job of pinch writing, alternating with staff-member Ernie del Rosario. Something To Eat Under Vice-chairman Art Tunes, the Food Production Committee, of which woody Wood is chairman, met with their Rotary Anns at the some of Art Tunes recently, and decided upon the following projects: 1) Home gardening and poultry raising by each Rotarian having space, with the project to be a community demonstration in which the Bureau of Plant Industry and the Bureau Animal Industry will assist. Seeds and instructional pamphlets will be furnished by the government for distribution in the community. If possible, each Rotarian having a home garden project will also help arrange for community use of vacant land for a Rotary-sponsored garden, for the benefit of poor people in the neighborhood. 2) The Food Production Committee plans to get the use of a vacant lot on Vito Cruz near the Stadium, for vegetable gardening by poor people living on and near F.B. Harrison. In addition to arranging for the lot, for seed, and for scientific supervision, the Committee proposes to furnish materials for fencing the plot, the work to be done by the beneficiaries of the projects. 3) The third project of the Committee is one of publishing in the press information on food production, such as planting calendar, hints on gardening, and the considerable value of producing food at home, Going To The States? To all Rotarains who plan a trip abroad in the next few months: Don’t forget the 42nd Annual Rotary International Convention, to be held at Atlantic City, May 27 to 31, 1951. This will be the fourth time the R.I. convention has been held in Atlantic City, Going To Europe? If you will be in England next May and September, be sure to get in touch with one or more of the Rotary clubs there. If possible, let them know in advance that you are coming, because British Rotarians wish to act as hosts to Rotarians from overseas during the Festival of Britain, May to September, 1951. This Festival is a nationwide demonstration of Britain’s contributions to civilization in the arts, sciences, and industrial design. Education's Fundamentals Pablito Lorenzo, with Balmy Balmaceda and Lino Neri, completes Rotary’s present representation in the Cabinet. Referring to the fact that Pablito has been mostly a farmer, a financier, and a practical business man, we asked a school superintendent recently how he liked working for a boss who was not a professional educator. "Just what we need,” he answered. “We'll take care of the education, if he will pay our teachers." Harder To Get Out Of Than In When Tiving Lovina tried to resign from the Cabinet, it required several letters and even considerable press publicity, just as Tony Villarama also had to wait a long time before his resignation was accepted. Finally, however, each has been granted the desired relief from responsibility, in order to devote his time to other pursuits. Incidentally, have you noticed that, the opposite of Rotary, the Cabinet is apparently harder to get out of than in? Detroit Convention Proceedings One copy of the proceedings at the Detroit in the 1950 Convention has been sent to each club throughout the world. If you want to see our copy, ask President Ben Legarda or Secretary Tony Anton.Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
