Malolos Rotary Club fights illiteracy in Bulacan

Description: page 39 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 724 to 748Summary: In a memorandum submitted by Rotarian Eliseo Tayao, Chairman of the Adult Education of the Rotary Club of Malolos, the laudable movement of that Rotary Club to combat illiteracy in the province of Bulacan has been made known. In requesting the Malolos Rotarians to take turns in financing the adult education movement, Rotarian Tayao reports as follows: "Almost a year ago acting upon the suggestion of Past Governor Emy Javier the Malolos Rotarians took up the illiteracy drive. "The two important steps or measures taken to reduce the existing illiteracy of Bulacan of 51.2 were: (a) The class plan and (b) the each-one-teach-one plan "In the (a) plan a class of eleven illiterates and 42 semi-illiterates were made literates after six months work tutored by Mr. Herminio Joson, teacher of the Marcelo H. del Pilar High School. What makes this drive significant is the fact that the illiterates mentioned above were inmates of the Provincial Jail. To carry out this project Rotarian "Carding" Nicolas financed and is still financing the project by paying the salary of the teacher. "It is also believed that each member of the Malolos Rotary has tutored at least fifty illiterates by using the (b) plan: each-one-teach-one plan. "With this work of the Malolos Rotary Club either directly or indirectly it can be said that the illiteracy in Bulacan has been reduced to around 38% of course with the cooperation of other agencies such as civic organizations and public and private schools of the province."
