Gov. Ben Legarda's monthly letter - The Rotary Balita no. 706 (October 9, 1952)

Description: page 24-28 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 700 to 723Summary: ALOHA COMMITTEE Rotarians passing through Honolulu need no longer be bored by the 4-hour wait at the airport. I am in receipt of a communication from Governor Charlie Fern of Hawaii that an Aloha Committee headed by George Bustard, 2151 Atherton Road, Honolulu 14, T.H.,, has been organized. This Committee will receive you and perhaps entertain you while you wait for your plane to refuel and thus make your waiting hours more pleasant and bear- able, if you take the trouble to notify the Aloha Committee and give them your flight number and date of your arrival. Thanks for your thoughtfulness, Charlie. CAVITE IS PRESENTED ROTARY CHARTER As announced to you in my previous letter, the Charter presentation of the Rotary Club of Cavite was held on September 13th at a program prepared for the occasion. The Cavite folks really went out of their way to make the affair a success. A launch of the Philippine Naval Patrol was made available to Rotarians who did not care to take the land route to Cavite and to insure the safety of those who preferred to travel overland, the mayors of the neighboring towns issued instructions to their police forces to guard the road leading to Cavite. Although the program was a little too long which ended almost at midnight, interest was kept alive. The rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants and the dancing which followed the program was enjoyed by all those present. That was a good start for Cavite. ROTARY CANCER PROJECT Manila Rotary's No. 1 Project this year is the fight against Cancer. It will be known as the "Rotary Cancer Project" and President Hans Menzi has requested me to make it known to the various Rotary Clubs in the Philippines that this is Manila Rotary's major project. Hans seeks the assistance of other Rotary Clubs and suggests that if it is acceptable to them other clubs make this issue their major project too this year. I quote from his letter: "a concerted effort will be excellent indeed and it would have the expected results." Details are being worked out by Dr. Paulino Garcia and Dr. Oscar Jacinto. We must "fight cancer with knowledge! - numerous facilities for the detection and treatment of cancer exist today. One of the most effective weapons however, is knowledge on the part of the public." UNITED NATION'S WEEK - OCTOBER 20-26 President Brunnier has proclaimed the observance of United Nations Week in Rotary throughout the world during the week, from October 20 to 26. Such a proclamation presents a challenging opportunity to our world fellowship. "On this seventh anniversary of the United Nations, each Rotary club in the world is being invited to send messages of greeting to seven Rotary clubs in countries other than its own." The potential impact of the plan is obvious. Not only will it mobilize consideration of the United Nations by leading men in 83 countries, it will also bring into action that "world fellowship of business and professional men” - which the Object of Rotary indicates - can be an instrument for the "advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace." MALOLOS HOLDS INTER-CITY FORUM On Saturday, September 6, the Malolos Club jointly with three other clubs, San Fernando, Tarlac and Cabanatuan conducted an Inter-City Forum, which was highly successful. The guest speaker at luncheon was the much admired and well-liked Secretary of National Defense, Hon. Ramon Magsaysay. His address was so interesting that he consumed a good part of the lunch time and kept the interest of his audience way beyond the time normally allotted to such addresses. When he finally closed his speech, his listeners wanted to hear more of what he had to say but the Forum had to proceed and we had to forego much of what we might have heard of his personal experience. There was warm cordiality among the members of the four clubs that had come to Malolos for the Inter-City Forum, and when the meeting was finally ended at a few minutes of 5 p.m., all Rotarians went home feeling that they had had a good get-together affair and had heard useful discussions on Rotary matters. It is recommended however that in holding Inter-City meetings, speakers should be chosen from among Rotarians whose topic of discussion would be on some phase of Rotary activity. On the whole, it was a very successful affair to which Past Governors Ted Hall, Marianito Lichauco and Emy Javier attended. DISTRICT CONFERENCE Due to the changed chronology of the District Conference and the District Assembly it has not been possible to get the confirmation of the clubs of District 48 to the plan tentatively set last April in Iloilo of holding the District Conference in Manila. Upon my return from the International Convention last July, I was informed that the Manila Club had gone ahead with plans for celebrating the District Conference in Manila, feeling assured that the tentative plans discussed at Iloilo last April would not be changed and that the clubs of District 48 would confirm Manila to be the site of the District Conference for 1953. I hope very sincerely that the clubs of District 48 will understand the steps taken by the Manila club and that all will cooperate to make this Conference the best-ever. The date: February 19 to 21, 1953.
