Editorial : education drive / “Ernie” Del Rosario

By: Description: page 2,35 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 700 to 723Summary: It has been said in jest that because of the Rotary's Cancer Information Campaign a lot of people have become depressed, worrying they might have cancer. In the old days, it was added, if people didn't feel good somewhere in the abdominal regions they just called it stomach ache. Now it might be cancer. The anti-cancer drive's objective is not to scare people. On the contrary, it is aimed at destroying fear by instilling an e second biggest killer after tuberculosis. The cancer is not widely known as an existing disease, it is not because it has not existed heretofore, as the jesters would imply is because it is not known by all. Education is the greatest asset of preventive medicine. Once we know the ills of men we shall know how to fight them. There has been less and less antipathy to a physical examination because enlightenment has superseded superstitions. People live longer because they no longer feel ashamed or embarrassed when they meet their doctor. The anti-cancer campaign must be prosecuted with determination so that we may someday look back to it as we now look back to malaria, yellow fever and other diseases which have been minimized if not totally conquered by science and public enlightenment on health measures
