Description: page 15 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 724 to 748Summary: Prof. Ramon Tapales, director of the UP conservatory of music, bewailed before Manila Rotarians at their luncheon meeting on Dec. 17, 1953, the lack of support from both the government and the people for cultural activities, especially in the field of music. Filipines, said the professor, are slowly being weaned away from a true appreciation of their native music, preferring foreign works more and more. This attitude, he stressed, is giving Filipino artists an inferiority complex. He urged the development of music appreciation, particularly appreciation for native airs and works, among the young as a means of effectively inculcating culture among the people. Martiniano Esguerra, cellist, Ramon Mendoza, concertmaster, Regalado Jose, pianist, Miss Mercedes Lopez, pianist, and Mrs. Salvacion Oppus Enriques, soprano, contributed to the meeting's entertainment by rendering beautiful Filipino songs and musical pieces.Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
