Gov. Art Ilagan's monthly letter - The Rotary Balita no. 736 (December 24, 1953) / Gov. Art Ilagan.

By: Description: page 29, 31 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 724 to 748Summary: GREETINGS One-third of OUR YEAR is gone! How about your committees? Are they working properly? Have you followed up on their assignments and plans? Now is the time to check up. YOUR YEAR will soon be over and those projects you discussed doing this year will remain on paper and will be left undone. Rotary enthusiasm rubs off easily and the responsibility for keeping it alive is in your hands. ROTARY EXTENSION President Joaquin Serratosa Cibils is asking for five new clubs in each District. Every club should be interested in the extension of Rotary. No community which meets the requirements should be denied a Rotary club. You know the communities near you. Which of them ought to have a Rotary club? Make a survey of these communities now and send in your report to my office right away. Now is the time to make a classification survey in your community to determine those classifications which are not represented in your rester. If any of them show they are eligible for Rotary, get them in. Don't sacrifice quality for quantity, however, be sure the proposed candidate is a man who lives up to the ethics of his business or profession and believes in the Object of Rotary and the Four-Way Test. DISTRICT CONFERENCE Our District Conference will be held in Bagui On February 5.6-7, 1954. All clubs are expected to send substantial delegations. All club officers are urged to attend. I cannot urge too strongly to have every club represented at this Conference. Important matters will be taken up. More importantly, the fellowship which will be generated at this meeting will bring Rotarians from all over the country closer together and will result in a strong and effective Rotary organization. The Baguio Rotarians, your host club for the coming District Conference, pose a challenge to your club - a challenge of fellowship, fun, and showmanship - here are the details: Your host club in putting up valuable prizes for a Rotary Talent Show. All club delegations are requested to prepare and put up a number to be presented in the Rotary Talent Show. Let's discover all that hidden talent in our clubs, talent just waiting - waiting for the right opportunity - and here, definitely, is the opportunity - Rotary Talent Show in Baguio during our District Conference. NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK In section with Prachmatis Ne, 418 of the President of the Philippines declaring Neverler 23 to December 1, 1953, as Philippine National Science Veck and resting a committee to take charge of ing all chic to participate in creating a scientific here throughout the Philippines during that The National Belence Week Committee requests that Hetary clubs fester during their meetings technical men as their guest speakers to speak on science sabers of their specialization. VISITS BY CLUBS In the very early days of Rotary, meetings were by rotation in the offices of the members. Many clubs are reviving this practice by visiting the business establishments of their members, lunching there and discussing the purposes of vocational service with employees. This is a splendid way of bridging the gulf between theory and practice. It also helps to dignify the occupation of the member visited when his fellow Rotarians come to see how he is serving society. For the employees, these visits - as one club puts it - "illustrate the importance of our vocations, that employees are human beings with families and homes like ours, that competition is helpful and necessary, that union troubles as a rule only occur in industry where there is improper management, and that we should listen at least to all customer complaints." In short, a visit by the Rotary club confers a dignity on the employer. His business associates see him in the light of one dedicated to a larger purpose - the service of society. And what can be done for one business can be done for all businesses. SPECIAL MAILINGS Rotary International informed me that sixteen clubs in the District have not sent the form "REQUEST FOR SPECIAL MAILINGS TO COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN." If you have not done it, please do it at once. It is not fair to your committee to withhold this additional help from them. SEMI-ANNUAL REPORTS There are still some clubs who have not yet sub- mitted their semi-annual reports of membership and paid their per capita tax to our Fiscal Agent (Ted Hall, P. O. Box 952, Manila) for this fiscal year. I wish to call your attention to the provisions of the Constitution and By-Laws of Rotary International regarding delinquent clubs. Please look it up in your copy of the Manual of Procedure. ATTENDANCE REPORTS This office has spent a big amount for telegrams during the past months to secure attendance re. ports. There is no excuse for any club to neglect this report, which should be in my hands on the 11th of the month. Will you please see that your report is mailed to reach my office on or before the 10th of the month? Thank you.
