Auto anecdotes : this Sherlock Holmes didn't live on Baker street, cops discovered

In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 775 to 799Summary: In London, a magistrate fined Sherlock Holmes one pound ($2.80) recently for parking in a no-parking zone. This Holmes didn't live on Baker Street, however. He lived on Blaker Street. In St. Louis, Mo., a woman phoned the State Highway Patrol Office and asked if her husband needed a chauffeur's license. "What type of machine does he drive?" asked Sergeant D. R. Reichmann. "Oh, it isn't a car," the woman said. "He drives a horse and wagon for hay rides." In Indianapolis, Ind., Municipal Judge Virgil Norris ruled Harley J. Driskell wasn't breaking the law when he sat in a parked car holding a sign warn ng motorists that a police radar speed check was just ahead. Said Judge Norris: "We need more signs like this to slow down a lot of drivers." But Mr. Driskell was sentenced to 60 days in jail and fined $50 for reckless driving and injuring a policeman who chased him because he had the sign. In Charlotte, N. C., a motorist noted two women drivers apparently having car trouble alongside the road. He pulled up to see if he could help. He was held up and robbed of $272 by the women. In Pendleton, Ore., remote control television has been introduced at the Temple Hotel which enables a motorist to drive up and register without entering the hotel or leaving his car. Here's how it works: A curbside structure resembling a phone booth is located outside the hotel which contains a small TV camera and a microphone. When a car drives up, its image and that of the auto's occupant shows up on a small receiving set at the registration clerk's desk All the driver has to do is lean out the right side window of his car for a face-to-face conversation with the clerk. At the same time, the device enables the clerk to check his accommodations without leaving his post and register the guest without having the guest enter the lobby.
