By: Description: page 19-21 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 775 to 799Summary: NOTE: In stating the kind of membership each of the members held, state how you came to determine the membership of each. At one of the meetings of the Manila Club, the following Rotarians were sitting together: Pedro, Juanito, Harry, Tomas, Ned. Jimmy and Julian. During the meeting the following conversation took place: Pedro: The attendance rules are pretty hard for some members to comply with because of pressure of work. There are however some members who could be 100 per centers; but they do not seem to take Rotary seriously. Juanito: You take my case for example. I take Rotary seriously. My average attendance record is about 90%, and in spite of my good record I am in danger of losing my membership in the Club through no fault of mine. Pedro: I know, Juanito, you are a good member. Do not be discouraged, you will not lose your membership in the Club. Harry: Rotary is a great organization, in spite of the strict attendance rules. I am the member with the most number of years of membership in the Manila Club. In 1921, two years after the Manila Club was organized, I was elected to membership at the age of 33 years. At that time attendance at the weekly meetings was not so strict as it is today, but nevertheless the average attendances of the individual members were pretty good. Like Juanito I had a good record. Of course I am no longer the young man that I used to be, and because of ill health I have not been able to attend the meetings as regularly as I would have like during the past years, but I always make it a point to attend whenever possible although attendance is no longer a problem for me. Pedro: Well, Harry, you have been a good Rotarian and you certainly deserve to enjoy the special privileges which you are now enjoying What about you, Tomas? How many years of membership have you? Tomas; I have only been a member of the Manila Club for the past 7 years. I became a member at the age of 28 years and am classified under "Law-Civil." At the end of this Rotary year I will probably transfer to another kind of membership and will then enjoy certain privileges which I am not enjoying at present. Pedro: Are you retiring from your law practice? Tomas: No. Pedro: You are certainly a lucky guy, Tomas. For a young man who has only been a member for 7 years you certainly have done well. I am 48 years of age and have been a member for 8 years and am classified under "Medicine-Surgery." I have not taken Rotary seriously as you have and therefore it will be many years before I could enjoy the privileges which you Ned: Well, Pedro, if you want to enjoy those privileges you had better take Rotary seriously. Pedro: What about you, Ned? What have you to say for yourself? Ned: I have been a Rotarian for 18 years. Jimmy, who has been a member for the past 12 years, enjoys the same privileges as I do. Although there is some similarity between Jimmy's membership and mine, my kind of membership has an advantage over his kind of membership. Jimmy: You are right, Ned, but in about 3 years from now my membership will have the advantage over yours. Pedro: What about you, Pepito? Pepito: I am at present enjoying many of the privileges you are enjoying. I like Rotary, but I fear that my membership may terminate at the end of the year much against my will. Pedro: You have done much for Rotary, and because of this I do not think you will lose your membership in the Club. And you, Julian, what have you to say? Julian: I have been a Rotarian for many years, and I too, have to learn a great deal about Rotary in spite of the fact that I am a Charter member. I am classified under "Rice Growing," a classification I have held since I was elected to membership. Can you state what kind of membership each of these Rotarians hold? Who is Tomas? What kind of a Rotarian is Julian?
