The Rotary Balita no. 791 (February 23, 1956)

310 North Elbert Milledgeville, Georgia January 3, 1956 Dear Mr. Anton: Because of holiday responsibilities as well as new household activities due to the very recent arrival of our first child, I am a bit slow in acknowledging the attractive handkerchiefs which were my lot at the ladies' night holiday party for the ladies of the Rotary Club of Milledgeville. The party was indeed a pleasure and a success, thanks greatly to the cooperation of many clubs such as yours. Following a delicious turkey dinner, the Rotariannes drew packages (showing the contents and reading the messages to the other guests), then enjoyed a program of native dances, songs and readings by six of the more than forty foreign students attending Georgia colleges on scholarships furnished by the Rotary Club of Georgia. These particular students are attending the University of Georgia and are from India, England, Scotland and France. Also among the guests were students from Korea attending through the same scholarship advantages our local college, Georgia State College for Women, which has a beautiful campus within the city limits. The President of this college resides in a lovely home here, which was formerly the Governor's mansion and is reputedly to be the purest form of Greek Revival architecture in the States. Another college here is Georgia Military College, the campus being the former state buildings at the time Milledgeville was capital of Georgia (1803-1868). Just outside our city is the Milledgeville State Hospital, reputedly the second largest state hospital institution in the States. It is second largest not because Georgia has more mentally ill and destitute than other states but because the facilities are in one group, instead of being scattered in many countries as is true in most other states. When we came to Milledgeville last year from Kansas City, Missouri, we thought of it only as a new name in our vocabulary but we have found our new home to be a lovely Southern town, with beautiful old homes, more industry than usually found in the southern part of our country, and peopled by extremely friendly, loyal and progressive folk. Please convey to your club our thanks for assisting in our local holiday enjoyment (and particularly my enjoyment of the very exquisite handkerchiefs). I hope that the limited group of postcards I have been able to collect and two church programs I happened to have here at home will be of interest to some of your members. Sincerely, (Sgd.)
