DISTRICT CONFERENCE AND DISTRICT ASSEMBLY The District Conference in Baguio (February 23-26) and the District Assembly in Zamboanga (April) 13-15) are both over, but Rotarians in District 48 continue to reminisce on these two outstanding Rotary events. To the host clubs, the Rotary Club of Baguio and the Rotary Club of Zamboanga, go the District's most heartfelt thanks for painstaking overall wonderful arrangements and most splendid hospitality and fellowship. Special commendations to Governors "Nanding" Manalo aad "Pons" de Leon. for fully giving of themselves in their respective roles in these affairs; also, to Presidents "Abe" Abellera and "Doc" Rodriguez, of Baguio and Zamboanga, respectively. Of course, to countless host Rotarians in both places, maraming salamat! 2. GOVERNOR NOMINEE LEAVING FOR LAKE PLACID "Ito" Tinio, district governor nominee, is leaving for Lake Placid on May 8th. After the international assembly at Lake Placid, he proceeds to Philadelphia to attend the international convention. He expects to return to the Philippines in early July, ready to assume and take over his duties as district governor. Godspeed to Ito and happy landings! 3. PAST GOVERNOR BEN LEGARDA TO COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION District 48 will be represented in the deliberations of the Council on Legislation of Rotary International by "Ben" Legarda, past district governor, who leaves for Philadelphia by the end of May. The meetings of the Council are scheduled to coincide with the international convention, ie, June 3 to 7, in Philadelphia. Vital matters of Rotary legislation will be taken up by the Council, including proposed changes in attendance requirements, membership, jurisdictional area, etc. best of luck and success! We all wish Ben the very best of luck and success! 4. PRESIDENT A. Z. BAKER President A. Z's plans for April include participation in Rotary gatherings in Sparta and Chattanooga, Tennessee: Huntsville and Birmingham, Alabama: Cincinnati, Ohio; Rochester and New York City, New York; and Washington, D.C. Following his visit with the Rotary Club of New York, President A. Z and Cornelia will depart for England where they will attend the conference of the Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland at Scarborough, England, 26- 29 April. 5. PRESIDENT NOMINEE GIAN PAOLO LANG Rotarian Gian Paolo Lang has been declared the president nominee of Rotary International by the president of R.I., in accordance with provisions of the by-laws of R.I. He will be elected to office at the 1956 Philadelphia convention. Rotarians around the world join in congratulating Paolo and extending best wishes for an outstanding Rotary year in 1956-57 under his leadership. Paolo is first vice president of R.I. and his classification is senior active member (former classification: produce exporting). He was born in Livorno, Italy, and attended the Livorno Technical Institute of Commerce. He became a member of the Rotary Club of Livorno in 1936, is a past president of that club, and has served R.I. as Director, District Governor and as committee chairman and member. Paolo and his wife, Valentina, live at 38 Via Roma, Livorno, Italy. 6. 1956 PHILADELPHIA CONVENTION Extensive plans have been completed for the great annual adventure in international friendship and fellowship of Rotary International to be held in Philadelphia, June 3-7. Inspirational speakers, panels, group discussions and international friendship meetings, as well as entertainment and social events, are features of the annual convention. To date, the following Rotarians from District 48 are known to have completed preparations to attend the convention: Ito Tinio (governor nominee). Ben Legarda (past district governor) and Jonby Carlos (president-elect of the Rotary Club of Manila). 7. FOR ASSIMILATING NEW MEMBERS An interesting approach has been made in a new publication for use by Rotary information committees. Copies are being distributed to chairmen of Rotary informational committees and to R.I. officers and committeemen. Pamphlet No. 237 is entitled "STEPS in the Selection, Election, Introduction, Education, and Assimilation of a New Member of a Rotary Club" and the title aptly describes the contents. Copies of this 24-page pamphlet are available from the secretariat at 10 each. 8. 1956 PACIFIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE Ollie Oberg, chairman of the 1956 Pacific Regional Conference Committee, has written under date of 2 April, reminding all Rotarians in the Pacific Basin to attend the 1956 Pacific Regional Conference to be held in Sydney, Australia, November 12-15. Lord Mayor P. D. Hills of Sydney extends to each and every Rotarian of the 21 countries facing the Pacific Ocean a most cordial lavitation and he looks forward to the pleasure of extending a very special welcome to all those attending the conference. 9. BOY SCOUTS INTERNATIONAL "Pat" Patterson, Head, Eastern Hemisphere Department of Rotary International, has written under date of 25 April, that the Boy Scouts International Bureau of London reported the appointment of Mr. Guillermo Padolina as a full-time Asian Scouter. Mr. Padolina is presently in London, but will be returning to Manila, at the end of April, to take up his duties to advising member associations on developing their organization and program. The London office states that Mr. Padolina will be most happy to cooperate with Rotarians. This information is being relayed to all clubs in District 48, should such clubs be interested in obtaining the type of services that Mr. Padolina can supply. 10. DO YOU KNOW... ... that it would take you 25 years to visit each Rotary Club in the world - using every day in the year? And, with new Rotary Clubs being organized at the present rate of nearly one each day, you could never would make it!
