An honor to President "A.Z."
In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 775 to 799Summary: At the conclusion of his journey throughout Africa and part of Europe President A. Z. visited Rotary clubs in France. The Republic of France honored Rotary International and the president on that occasion by conferring on President Baker the rank of Chevalier in the Legion of Honor. This speaks well of the excellent standing of Rotary in France and is an appreciated award. After a few days at their home in Cleveland at the conclusion of their African and European travels, President A. Z. and his wife, Cornelia, journeyed to St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S.A., where the president spoke at a Rotary gathering. Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A., was the next stop. There A. Z. spoke at a meeting of Rotarians from three districts and at the convention of the Future Farmers of America. While in Kansas City, Mayor Roe Bartle, a past district governor of R.I., presented to A. Z. a key to the city. On 17 October the Bakers were guests at a surprise testimonial dinner honoring Past R.I. President Richard C. Hedke of Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., on the occasion of Dick's retirement from business. President A. Z.'s schedule for the end of October and first of November calls for his participation in a meeting of the North American members of the 1956 convention committee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and meetings of the finance and executive committees at R.I. headquarters in Evanston. After a brief Rotary visit in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A., President A. Z. and Cornelia will travel to Sydney, Australia, for a meeting of the 1956 Pacific regional conference committee. En route there, they are scheduled to stop in Hawaii and following the committee meeting a series of Rotary visits in Australia and New Zealand will fill their itinerary for the remainder of the month of November and December. (See succeeding pages.) R.I. PRESIDENT, MRS. BAKER ARRIVING DECEMBER 9 The President of Rotary International will visit Rotary clubs in the Philippines beginning Friday, December 9, when he is expected to arrive before noon. His visit will last until December 13. It is not often that the President of Rotary International has given so many days to visit one country. We have been nevertheless selected for a long stay of both President and Mrs. Baker and on this occasion the Rotary clubs of the Philippines have reason to rejoice. The Bakers have recently returned to the United States after an extensive visit to Rotary clubs on the continent of Africa during which they travelled 20,000 miles from the Mediterranean to the Cape and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. Later they visited a number of countries in Europe. During that trip "AZ" was decorated by the governments of Egypt and France. The Philippines will be the longest stop on the Bakers' South Pacific trip which will take them also to Alaska, Australia, Fiji Islands, Formosa, Hawaii, Hongkong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand. Our Governor Danding has personally taken the task of arranging all the details for the heavy calendar that the Bakers are going to have during their visit to the Philippines. Governor Danding appointed a committee headed by Vice-President Jonby Carlos and who helped him in drawing the layout for the program to be followed during this visit. As far as the Manila Rotarians are concerned, most important event will be the Barrio Fiesta with dinner offered by the Rotary Club of Manila on Friday, December 9. On Monday, December 12, the Manila Rotarians will also be requested to join the motorcade which will take "AZ" and Cornelia Baker to Tagaytay where a luncheon meeting will be held and will be the regular meeting of several provincial clubs. The details of the program from President Baker's arrival to his departure are quoted on the next pages and to the expressed request of Governor Danding and President Conrado, the Balita is urging all the Manila Rotarians to assist the club in extending the cordial hospitality of the Rotary Club of Manila to President and Mrs. Baker in line with our established tradition, Committee on President’s Baker’s Visit.
