Report of meetings : May 24, 1951 / by Ernie del Rosario
Description: page 7-8 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 650 to 674Summary: Luncheon guest speaker at today's Rotary meeting, Secretary of Education Teodoro Evangelista set forth the three-point educational policy of the government administration as pursued by his department. He listed them as the following: (1) teach the Filipino children in schools to know the meaning of freedom; (2) teach them to serve the cause of freedom; and (3) teach them to enjoy the blessings of freedom. "To know, to serve and to enjoy," he emphasized, "upon these three infinitives, so to speak, rest the sum and substance of the education we give the children in our schools in the matter of freedom." In teaching the meaning of freedom, Secretary Evangelista pointed out, the teachers attempt to make it clear that freedom can operate only in a realm of law, of order and harmony. The savage in the woods or the dissident in the mountains may boast of his freedom, he added, but neither of them is truly free on that score. He then proceeded to elaborate on the program to teach the youth to serve the cause of freedom by emphasizing to them the glorious history of our country and the blessing in store for them with the preservation of the democratic heritage. In conclusion he described the blessings of freedom which those who live in a democracy enjoy. Earlier in the luncheon, Daniel Aguinaldo was inducted as Baby Rotarian. He will be known as "Dan." His sponsor was "Monching" Araneta. ----- Judge: "Was your friend in the habit of talking to himself when alone?" Witness: "To tell the truth, your honor, I was never with him when he was alone."Item type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
