By: Description: page 17-21 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 650 to 674Summary: Police Trust Fund By action of the Board of Directors, Manila Rotary recently donated P200 to the Manila Police Trust Fund. ReclassificationPolice Trust Fund By action of the Board of Directors, Manila Rotary recently donated P200 to the Manila Police Trust Fund. Reclassification Upon request of the Rotarians concerned, and after investigation by the Classification Committee and confirmation by the Board of Directors, the classification of Greg Gregorio has been changed to "Fishing" instead of "Loan Association." Of the several classifications recently proposed, only one remains unacted upon by the Board of Directors, namely, that of Hilary Silayan, who because of illness has been unable to attend Rotary for several months. Incidentally, have you called on Hilary? Leaves of Absence Leaves of absence have been granted to Conrado Benitez for two months, and to Lele Hernandez and Tony Rocha. Charlie Holmes who has left the Philippines is on leave of absence until June 30th, at which time his resignation becomes effective. Seeing-Eye Dog for Gloria An association in the United States which trains seeing-eye dogs for service to the blind and then makes these marvelous animals available to worthy blind persons has offered to donate a dog to Miss Gloria Cruz. For the benefit of our younger Rotarians, it may be explained that Gloria Cruz is a talented blind girl who has been assisted through college by Manila Rotary, and is now taking advanced studies at Perkins Institute with our help and that of an American foundation. Before recommending that the dog be accepted by Gloria, careful investigation is being made regarding transportation to the Philippines, effect of the climate here on the dog, and the extent to which it could actually serve its mistress. One angle, for instance, is the fact that at present dogs are prohibited from riding on buses, the form of transportation which Gloria will probably use after her return to the Philippines. Taipeh Rotary Recently President Ben had the pleasure, along with a few other Manila Rotarians, of meeting President Kwo from Taipeh Rotary at the International Airport, during his brief visit while passing through Manila. Going on a Trip? Before going abroad, you can get small Filipino flags for presentation to Rotary Clubs you plan to visit. See Tony Anton or the Assistant Secretary, Mr. Dedal. An Ounce of Prevention The Traffic Committee, Bob Monical, chairman, has long been concerned with educating reckless drivers rather than merely punishing them. To this end, they have prepared educational pamphlets for distribution to drivers and prospective drivers. Demonstrating their own belief in the worthiness of their project, the Committee members have among themselves already raised P1,600 for publication of the pamphlets. The Club Board of Directors has recently appropriated an additional P500 for printing the pamphlets. Flag for San Francisco Responding to a request from the Salvation Army in San Francisco, the Board of Directors recently authorized sending a Filipino flag for use in a trade school in that city. It will be recalled that last March Rotarian Claude Bates, regional director of the Salvation Army, with headquarters in San Francisco, was in Manila and gave our club an inspiring address. Rotary Anns Meet The Inner Wheel Club of Manila will hold another monthly meeting today, June 14, at the Riviera. Important table business at this luncheon monthly gathering will be the annual election of the club's officers for the year. Other business will include the annual report of President "Trining" Legarda and of the chairman of the various standing committees. The awarding of a beautiful loving cup donated by Heacock and Co. to the outstanding Rotary Ann of the Year will highlight the occasion. Other members regularly attending the meeting for six months will also receive the traditional orchid award. Special guests at the meeting will be Manila newshens. *** Vince said, "She talked in her sleep, so he sent her home to mutter." *** Vic said, "Last hot season I spent most of my afternoons in a shady spot in the country." *** Hans said, "I didn't think of those places. opened until evening."
