By: Description: page 13-19 In: Rotary Club of Manila. The Rotary Balita No. 650 to 674Summary: War Widows The Committee for Relief to War Widows, under Willie Dy Buncio's Fellowship Committee, and with Totti Eraña as the Chairman of the project, has gathered donations of over P5,000. Part of this money is being distributed in cash by K. Huang, Treasurer of the Committee, on the basis of P100 to each of the 26 officially reported widows living in various parts of the Philippines. With the remainder of the money, provisions are being purchased, to give each widow one sack of rice, one large sack of sugar, one case of sardines, one case of milk, one-half case of corned beef, textiles, shortening, and other items. The purpose of the Committee has been to give these widows temporary assistance to help tide them over the present difficult days pending their receipt of government pension or other assistance. The list of donors to this worthy project, all of whom contributed on a strictly voluntary basis, is as follows: Adamson University (Doc Adamson) Anton, Tony Antonino, Gaudy E. (Davao) Ayesa, Doc. Bailey, Fay Brussolo, Bruce Buencamino, Vic Bunuan, Vince Carlos, Jonby Certeza, Tim Dy Buncio, Willie. Delgado Bros. Yanzon, Yan Dindo Gonzales Where’s the Rotary Room? Through long years of use by Manila Rotary, a room off the lobby of the Manila Hotel became known as the "Rotary Room." Now our club has outgrown that room, and we meet in the Winter Garden and overflow into its alcove. But the name "Rotary Room" clings to the old meeting place, and the Board of Directors have sanctioned the use of this name at the room's entrance, while at the same time disapproving the display of the Rotary Wheel emblem within the room. Social Note Former Governor Marianito Lichauco, who by his exhaustive knowledge of Rotary principles and his attendance at Manila Rotary has endeared himself to the Manila club, is giving a lauriat party, assisted by his Rotary Ann, on Sunday, July 1st, in honor of our outgoing and incoming boards of directors. Help Not Given The Rotary Club, widely and favorably known to be composed of civic-minded men, receives a surprisingly large number of requests for help or for publicity. Many of these requests are in themselves very worthy, and all receive consideration by the Board of Directors. However, only a comparatively few of the causes can be given the assistance requested, because in the first place, there is a limit even to the pooled resources of Rotarians; again, because by the rules of Rotary International we primarily sponsor our own activities rather than those being undertaken by outsiders; and finally, because the Rotary Club definitely cannot be used as an advertising or ticket-selling agency. Homeside Meetings To promote fellowship and acquaintance, every Rotarian will be given an opportunity in the forthcoming Rotary year to meet each other Rotarian at a Homeside meeting. The 36 hosts have already volunteered. Soon the schedule for these parties will be announced, with the guest lists prepared one year in advance. This will make it easier to keep your Homeside dates. Resignation Roy Abarbanell has resigned from Manila Rotary on account of permanently leaving the Philippines. Order of the Orchid Following are the rules set up when the Order of the Orchid was established toward the end of 1948 for giving recognition to perfect attendance. Absence from Manila Rotary may of course be made up by attending the meeting of another Rotary Club within 6 days before or after the missed meeting. (1) Members who have maintained 100% attendance during first or second half of any Rotary half-year, will have their names on a board suspended below the Rotary Wheel and the Order of the Orchid, which will be displayed during every meeting held at the Manila Hotel. (2) A name so displayed will remain so long as a member retains his 100% attendance. At the end of each Rotary half-year, the names of those members who have not maintained their 100% attendance will be removed, and the names of those who have attained the 100% mark will be placed on the roll. (3) The Order of the Orchid will come into force on the first day of January 1949, and the names will be hung according to the record of attendance. The member with the longest record of 100% attendance will be at the top. the next will be below him, and so on. The position of the names of those who qualified on December 1948 will be added to the list in alphabetical order, and at the end of each subsequent half year, the names of those who have qualified will be added in alphabetical order and suspended below the names already hung. (4) For each full Rotary year of 100% attendance a member will have a star added to his name board. Attendance Pins Next week special Rotary pins for 100% attendance will be distributed. These pins, donated by Dinny Gunn, Joe Orosa, EA Perkins, and Monching Araneta, contain a replaceable numeral which signifies the number of years of perfect attendance. ----- Apologies to Paul Parrette: "A rich uncle is the kin you like to touch." Does he use Camay? *** It is a waste of time and energy to tell a hair-raising story to Ben.
