With one eye on the clock and the other on his manuscript, at our July 1st meeting, our new President Emy read to us his aims and objects for the coming Rotary year. One of his resolves was to close all meetings promptly at 2:00 p.m., but by the big clock on the wall it was two-two before he struck the closing note on the big brass bell. His oratory was so superb, and his theme so excellent, that we would all have been willing to have given him another minute or two.
At our July 1st meeting Past Governor Mariano Lichauco read to us a well prepared speech containing splendid advice to our newly elected officers; and without the waste of time installed them in their respective offices. To President Emy he handed the gavel and expressed his conviction that Emy will use it wisely and efficiently.
Past President Manoling presented to Past President Ned Hall the large cup donated by Past President George Malcolm for those who perform each year the most outstanding Rotary service. The names engraved on the cup are Ray Reynolds, Pepe Galvez, Vince Bunuan, Balmy Balmaceda, Emy Javier, and Ned Hall.
The charming daughter of President Emy, assisted by the daughter of Rotarian Hirst and the daughter of Ramon Oriol pinned orchids on all those who had 100% attendance during the past six months. To be decorated by such gracious young Rotary daughters is a big incentive to be “Johnny on the spot” at every meeting.
We regret to announce that our Board of Directors have accepted the resignations of Rotarians Enrique Razon and Abe Subido. On the other hand we are pleased to state that the Board added the name of Vince Bunuan to the list of Directors for the present Rotary year.

Over the radio all of Manila seems to have listened to our newest Honorary member, His Excellency, the President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino, deliver the address of the evening at the last meeting of the Rotary year in the Pavilion of the Manila Hotel on June 24. The subject was the State of the Nation. The gist of the speech was that we must tread lightly and avoid abrupt and violent movements for fear of disastrous consequences. The Speaker indulged in analogies and other figures of speech to illustrate his point, and to add a humorous touch to his remarks. The entrance of the President, escorted by his staff, and high Government officials, with the audience standing at attention, was accompanied by the playing of the National Anthem. Ned Hall, in his usual masterful way, led the audience in the singing of our Rotary songs and special numbers dedicated to the daughter of the President, and to our Rotary Anns. President Manoling in his most gracious and pleasing manner introduced those seated at the head table.

In our last Balita we told about “Irving Hart, a Rotarian at Heart”. He denies our statement about his service with the Girl Scouts, but admits that for 25 years he has been the National Representative of the Camp Fire Girls of the Philippines, and has received awards “in recognition of distinctive service to the youth of our country.” He submits this poem to explain why he practices what we preach.
Myself
I have to live with myself, and so I want to be fit for myself to know I want to be able as the days go by Always to look myself straight in the eye. I don't want to stand, with the setting sun And hate myself for things I've done.

It was a lovely spring morning and a worm was plowing his way happily through the soft earth, occasionally poking his head above ground to survey the spring scene. On one of his looks around he saw behind him the cutest little worm he had ever laid eyes on.
“Hello, Sweetie,” he flirted, “What you doing tonight?”
“Don't be silly,” came the reply. “I'm your other end.”
