editorialBECAUSE OF FRIENDSHIP?Editorial cautioning that friendship alone is not grounds for proposing someone for Rotary membership; a candidate must fit Rotary's classification system of one representative man per business or profession.p. 2
When a big-hearted man has something good, he wants to share it with his friends. That is the perfectly human reason why Rotarians often propose their friends for membership.
And that is fine. Rotary is built on Friendship. Or at least on Service, and the two concepts are akin.
But just because a man is a friend and a good fellow is insufficient reason why he should be invited to join Rotary. Rotary International lists the qualification "socially acceptable," as sixth and last of the qualifications for membership.
A man may be an undisputed community leader, an open-handed philanthropist, a witty raconteur, and already the first-named friend of half the town. Yet we will do well to remember that for each individual there is one unique basis for Rotary membership. This fundamental plan set up by R.I. is the unsentimental, impersonal system of "selecting one active and representative man from each business and profession."
Only when a friend can properly classify should his name be proposed.

For guest speaker we had Attorney Marcial Lichauco, and when we call him attorney, it is merely because he happens to be the number one adviser of the government on corporation deadlocks. Famous for his brilliance and a dazzling American wife besides, the guest speaker naturally did not surprise anyone when he spoke on, of all things, Fil-American relationships. As every Rotarian head agreed: heck! the man oughta know! and take it from us he did! For one thing, the whole theme was based on a premise of sweet understanding, and because we remember having heard from Marcial himself that the many number of years that he had been married, his wife has never lost her temper on him, we accepted his expositions for all that their optimistic colors were worth. In a nutshell: time, perseverance and patience are the three cardinal prerequisites towards a finer understanding between the two peoples. No half-way measures, give all or bust, for in half-ways lie the dangerous currents. It is not entirely the fault of the Americans that they do not know us as well as they should, because after all we do not make enough efforts to help them know us. And to clinch the point: there is always the great common bond of this thing called democracy, remember?

As if Ambassador Romulo was not enough to stagger us with his eloquence, along came Dr. Stanley Jones to magnetize us with his discourse on world peace. The man was right in every way, and each way was forceful and eloquent. For instance: the more democracy is extended, the more vital becomes the protection of its frontiers.... There can never be any peace so long as there is inequality; a democratic equality means an equality of opportunity, regardless of race, birth, religion and sex.. The continuation of democracy is embedded in our children, and the children are the older generation's responsibility.. Labor and capital are poised for an inevitable struggle ..... and security is possible only when these two cooperate with each other ... Quoting from Benjamin Keith, the good doctor went on to say that the future belongs only to those who can cooperate, and in this sense, the women will be the psychic center of that cooperation..... tell me, have you ever heard so much wisdom said with so much eloquence in a long, long time?
Side-lights: Hanz Menzi and Gumer Garcia have returned, not like the proverbial bad coin but like the legendary liberator ..... Jack Preysler was fined P20.00 for winning that frigidaire at the first aquacade of the Jaycees at the Rizal Natatorium. And speaking of the Jaycees, charming coach Lyle Draves and his wife were some of the guests.

1. We have received word that our visiting Rotarians from the provinces are now satisfied with the way they are being received in our Club. Let us continue to build up this good reputation and show our real spirit of friendliness and fellowship during our coming District Conference. Let everybody be a perfect host.
2. The success of our meetings lately has been largely due to the fact that all our members have been very cooperative. They have given me valuable suggestions at every turn and have reminded me of things that I had forgotten. This is the real Rotary spirit. I would like to urge upon all that, if there are certain deficiencies or omissions or things to be corrected in our Club or suggestions as to the way its affairs should be run, let us not keep our criticisms to ourselves but communicate them to our Board of Directors or to me personally so that the necessary remedy or correction may be made.
3. Let me again remind all those with pending Rotary matters unaccomplished, such as the handing in of their pictures, the filling in of "Who is Who", etc., to please attend to them at once. Let us try to be punctual in the performance of our Rotary duties and obligations.
